Non-denominational Church Leaders, Listen Up!

As a worship leader in a non-denominal church, who longs for worship renewal, I cannot recommend this paper highly enough. Worship leaders and especially lead pastors ought to heed Packiam's voice. I have heard many people say the things he is advocating for, but he is perhaps the first, and definitely the most articulate, non-denominational church leader doing so. And he is one of the few in our "tradition" that has the guts to actually do something about it.

It's an art to offer thoughtful questions without sounding attacking. I thought Glenn nailed it.

I thought Glenn took a good look at some of the assumptions we may have adopted in the church regarding our times of Corporate Worship. Assumptions we have adopted without the critical thinking that accompanies other inclusions into the liturgy of our services. It's not easy to ask those questions without seeming like you think we've all steered away and are headed totally down the wrong path. I received a healthy set of questions, from someone who believes in the worship services' power. But also doesn't assert that we need to accept it all, without critical thinking, because it is powerful.
Overall I thought it was great. The only critique is the scholarly nature of the writing, made it a bit hard to read at times, but that may say more about me then the writing itself.

Challenging and more than worth the 20 min

Glenn Packiam makes a scholarly contention for a reformation of our perspective on worship with grace, passion, and respectful erudition. And he does so from the "inside." His words land with so much weight not because they are so finely crafted (Although, his writing is excellent, if not a little academic because of its context); They call for a realignment with an all-encompassing story pre-dating any clever and painstakingly assembled modern position on worship. Especially resonant with me was the discussion on how the perceived interchangeable nature of worship FORMS often carries over almost imperceptibly into a disembodied and historically disjointed CONTENT. I'll be reading this several more times and considering the implications of such a thoughtful perspective on our worship
