The first study of the everyday political life under Stalin, this book examines citizenship through common practices of expressing Soviet identity in the public space. The Stalinist state understood citizenship as practice, with participation in a set of political rituals and public display of certain "civic emotions" serving as the marker of a person's inclusion in the political world. The state's relations with its citizens were structured by rituals of celebration, thanking, and hatred-rites that required both political awareness and a demonstrable emotional response. Soviet functionaries transmitted this obligation to ordinary citizens through the mechanisms of communal authority, including workplace committees, volunteer agitators, and other forms of peer pressure, as much as through brutal state coercion. Yet, the populace also often imbued these ceremonies with different meanings: as a popular fête, an occasion to get together after work, a chance to purchase goods not available on other days, and an opportunity to indulge in some drinking. The people also understood these political rituals as moments of negotiation whereby they would fulfill their "patriotic duty" but expected the state to reciprocate by providing essential services and basic social welfare. Nearly-universal passive resistance to required attendance challenges theories about the mass internalization of communist ideology.

Focusing on the last years of World War II and immediate postwar years, Yekelchyk shows how formulaic rituals under Stalin could create space for the people to express their concerns, fears, and prejudices, as well as their eagerness to be viewed as citizens in good standing.

The best keepsake for you and your baby

When I found out I was pregnant I went out and bought three different pregnancy organizers/journals/keepsake books. This one is by far and away my favorite. The others are very bogged down with extra information that you will already have if, like me, you also bought a small library of pregnancy reference books. This fun and beautiful book is larger and more of a keepsake book than the others, which are more like organizers. I like that there are places to include photographs, which the others are too small to have. This will be a joy to look at in years to come to remember my pregnancy, and my baby will enjoy having this special record of our time together during pregnancy. I will buy this as a gift for all of my pregnant friends in the future.

Looked at dozens of books and glad I picked this one

I looked through dozens of these sorts of books on Amazon, at the bookstore, and on Etsy. I am so glad I chose this book. So the name is really hokey, and it's not as cute as some of the others. I can get over that, as the inside of the book is great. A lot of the books I looked at had some really weird questions in them to answer and too much focus on "my growing boobs" and "I'm puking all the time" and things you wouldn't exactly want in a book. This book covers those topics but in a more tactful, polite way. Yet, it's still fun. The prompts/questions were by far the best of all the books I saw. I also like that the book is organized by weeks, not months, and has space for belly bump pictures and ultrasound photos. There is a page for each prenatal visit and for each week. There are also other pages regarding how we told family, etc. I feel like this book covers all the essentials in a fun yet diplomatic way (won't feel weird about sharing it with people), and is the right length. I'd intended to also keep a journal, but I've been so tired that I've just been writing in this book. It has been a fun experience.

Best pregnancy journal ever.

I absolutely adore this book. Of all the pregnancy journals I have ever looked at, this one is the best. It is a week by week style book. It has sections for a weekly belly shot (I took monthly photos, but I filled those slots with other non-belly photos (like if we went to the park, or had a family BBQ, etc.) & little sections to write your thoughts about being pregnant. It has little survey sections for each trimester asking what you're craving & avoiding, what your favorite things are about being pregnant & your least favorite things, etc.

If you are a person who likes to write a Lot & can fill a plain journal with thoughts very easily, then this may not be the book for you. However, if you like recording your thoughts but (like me) can not fill a big journal page without repeating yourself over & over, then this book would probably work well for you.

I have filled out one with both of my pregnancies & I gave one to my sister when she was pregnant with her first. :)

I 100% regret this purchase...

I genuinely have no idea how this book received multiple five-star ratings. There is very little useful information on amino acids here. I first became interested in amino acid therapy after seeing "The Medicated Child" and, as psychology student, being incredibly concerned about the lack of longitudinal studies as to what these megadoses of serious psychiatric medications might be doing developmentally to these quite young children. I tried researching alternative treatment methods and came across some studies on a supplement consisting of high doses of vitamins/amino acids tailored to the specific needs of the individuals with promising results. Since then, I've tried to find some less expensive, highly-praised reference materials to keep at the ready and boost my knowledge. This was not it. If you don't know what amino acids are, or the underlying causes of some psychological conditions and how a holistic approach could help alleviate some symptoms, this will be great at glossing over some broad concepts. It won't go so far as to tell you how to actually effectively use amino acids to help yourself or others, though. There is VERY little specific dosing information here, and also very few quite relevant warnings about how certain amino acids which are mentioned can actually exacerbate some of these conditions. Honestly, this was worthless to me and a waste of money. I got nothing useful from this book. "Amino Acids in Therapy: A Guide to the Therapeutic Application of Protein Constituents" is far more comprehensive and informative. Again, if you lack any basic knowledge on wellness, psychological conditions, holistic medicine, and amino acid therapy, you might in fact take away the idea that amino acid therapy could be useful from this book, but it has no new information for anyone with even a basic foundation in those areas.

Don't waste your money or your time.

Useless, uninformative and a waste of money. If you want to learn about amino acids and how they relate to your symptoms, you won't do that here. He says that you should take them all, and your body will pick the one it needs, so there is no point in understanding anything about the different aminos, or how they might affect you.
The book is one big infomercial for a product this man sells. I wish I had paid more attention to who it was that wrote all those glowing reviews. I wonder what he paid for them.

Excellent treatment of the 21 verses in Obadiah

At first glance this commentary does not seem very lengthy, but when one looks closer, it is easily noticeable that the book of Obadiah is only 21 verses long. A decent commentary for a book containing only 21 verses will not likely exceed what Block presents in this volume (to exceed this by any significant number would constitute theological "fluff" and be an overkill). Other commentaries such as the NITOT give Obadiah only 45 pages (including the title page). This work is 128 pages, and in my opinion, 128 pages of commentary for a book of the Bible that is only 21 verses in length is good. This volume is not short-changed by any means, and it is not overly lengthy. It does an adequate job of presenting the author's arguments. I found the background information provided in this work to be helpful and beneficial to getting a clearer picture of the text itself. The feature of this commentary I appreciated the most is how it breaks down each pericope and offers a main idea based off the author's translation of the Hebrew text. Block's scholarship and work (such as his commentary on Ezekiel) is superb, and, as a result, I had high expectations for this work. He did not disappoint - I was pleased with the purchase, and this is a welcome addition to my library.

Solid and Helpful Commentary

This is the first Old Testament commentary in this series that I have used. I really like the New Testament volumes, so I was pleased to find an Old Testament commentary in the same commentary family. It was very helpful in preparing to preach Obadiah. All of the textual and historical issues are dealt with, and the theological reasoning is sound. I'll definitely purchase other commentaries in this series.

Nice Little Commentary on a Little OT Book.

I love the NT version of this commentary and so thought I would give the OT a try with Obadiah. It's a bit short, not sure it's worth the $20 I spent on it in that regard, but this is an excellent little commentary on the shortest book of the OT. Would I buy it again? Probably.
