The Barbarossa Covenant, by Ian A. O'Connor

"Author O'Connor...has written a nifty thriller that...holds reader interest with his breakneck plot...The end result fits nicely in the Tom Clancy-meets-Dan Brown canon." - Kirkus Reviews.

Past and present collide in the opening pages of The Barbarossa Covenant when retired FBI agent Justin Scott becomes a target for assassination while en route to Rome at the behest of the Vatican's secretary of state. Before learning why, the reader is whisked back to 1940 wartime London where British Intelligence is working feverishly on an audacious plan to thwart the imminent cross-channel Nazi invasion. With England's fate hanging in the balance, a papal emissary hand-delivers a sealed letter to Adolf Hitler from a source no mortal would dare ignore or disobey. The letter is lost to history in 1945 with the fall of Berlin-only to surface without warning in the Vatican seven decades later. A very troubled pope wants Justin to authenticate or disprove both message and messenger-an admitted all but impossible task as the Doomsday Clock readies to strike midnight.

Review
In O'Connor's (The Twilight of the Day, 2001, etc.) thriller, a retired FBI agent foils a Vatican takeover with roots in a WWII maneuver orchestrated by Ian Fleming and Winston Churchill. Retired agent Justin Scott--introduced in The Seventh Seal (2005)--arrives at an airport in Rome during a strange terrorist shootout. One of these mysterious figures muses to herself: "Szuros, you always insisted Winston Churchill had done something long ago which would one day compel Moscow to declare war on the Holy See, yet we all chose to dismiss that warning. What happened here moments ago proves you were right all along, and now the world is about to reap a terrible whirlwind." The novel then shifts to London in 1940. Lt. Cmdr. Ian Fleming suggests to Winston Churchill that they forge a letter from Sister Lucia, the Virgin of Fatima, who, in real life, claims to have had visions of the Virgin Mary as a child; her "letter" will be used to convince Hitler to invade Russia instead of England. Dr. Margaret Smalling is dispatched with newly invented penicillin to cure the ailing virgin and bring back handwriting samples. Cutback to Scott, a retired FBI agent who has done previous work for clergy. He's being briefed by Cardinal Kettering, to whom Scott's longtime friend Monsignor Jack O'Bryan reports, about some puzzling messages from Russia. Soon, various religious leaders are being killed or abducted, and the pope calls for an emergency meeting of cardinals in Rome.Scott is also made privy to the last letter of Fatima, which hints at the world's end or at least the church's toppling by Russian forces. As Scott tracks down various antagonists, a possible nuclear bomb threat hovers over the convening clergy. Author O'Connor, a retired USAF colonel, has written a nifty if overly ambitious thriller that brings up a surfeit of interesting threads--Dr. Smalling's mission, the conspiratorial survival of the grand duchess of Russia, etc.--that don't have ample time to fully develop. Still, O'Connor holds reader interest with his breakneck plot and some particularly charming characterizations, especially in the banter between Scott and O'Bryan. The end result fits nicely in the Tom Clancy-meets-Dan Brown canon. Fun if dizzying mashup of history and thrills. -- Kirkus Reviews

Alexander Panov was going to rule the world through a czar of his making and a pope of his choosing. Justin Scott is having none of it!

Stunning story telling anchored in history and fraught with suspense. review by r. vair
By rick vair
A masterpiece of story telling! Mr. O'Connor intertwines fact and fiction, past and present as if he were Merlin himself. The tension of modern powers and spycraft are intermingled in the web of past and present political machinery. Merchinery that pits spy against spy, country against country, the past against the present, the State against the Church and opposing events so strange they could provoke the Day of God's Wrath.
Elements anchored in the Russian Revolution, World War II and real, documented miraculous visions converge to bring the world and the Church to the brink of the Apocalypse.
More suspense than Brown's Da Vinci Code, Silva's Confessor or Fleming's Moonraker, the Barbarossa Covenant's tension builds...and builds until it is unbearable. You cannot turn the pages fast enough.
The more familiarity the reader has with modern world history, the deeper the satisfaction. But even a novice will be enthralled in this masterful tale of crosses, double crosses and trupple crosses that bring the entire world to the brink of an apocalypse too horrifying to imagine. A great, great read!

Mystery, intrigue, and manipulation lead Justin Scott on a global hunt to unscramble the influence of the past on the present.
By robert michael barry
Wow! This is my first reading about Justin Scott. It will not be the last! This book offered intrigue and mystery into the intricate nature of The Church and the weaving of a web during World War II that stretched beyond the secret events. I loved the manipulation of the written word to fit the purpose of one family's dream!

African Art (Taschen Basic Genre Series), by Stefan Eisenhofer

With examples from every region of the continent, "Handmade in Africa" demonstrates the wide variety of African art. The splendid art of the African peoples occupies an unusual place in the concert of world cultures. It is anything but 'primitive', being characterized rather by a highly developed sense of design - whether it's masks, ancestral figures, ceramics, basketry, metalwork, or weapons. The items in this volume, mostly datable only with difficulty, start with a sculptured head from Nigeria, which may be as old as the 12th century, and extend from a 15th/16th-century salt container from Sierra Leone to the 19th and 20th centuries, to which most of the extant artworks belong. With examples from every region of the continent - from Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Congo as well as a dozen other countries including Madagascar and South Africa - this book demonstrates the wide variety of African art, describing the social and religious background without which this art, which today is increasingly threatened with extinction, could not be understood. Each book in Taschen's "Basic Genre Series" features: a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period and a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations.

Anna Julia Cooper, Visionary Black Feminist: A Critical Introduction, by Vivian M. May

Vivian M. May explores the theoretical and political contributions of Anna Julia Cooper, a renowned Black feminist scholar, educator and activist whose ideas deserve far more attention than they have received. Drawing on Africana and feminist theory, May places Cooper's theorizing in its historical contexts and offers new ways to interpret the evolution of Cooper's visionary politics, subversive methodology, and defiant philosophical outlook. Rejecting notions that Cooper was an elitist duped by dominant ideologies, May contends that Cooper's ambiguity, code-switching, and irony should be understood as strategies of a radical methodology of dissent.

May shows how across six decades of work, Cooper traced history's silences and delineated the workings of power and inequality in an array of contexts, from science to literature, economics to popular culture, religion to the law, education to social work, and from the political to the personal. May emphasizes that Cooper eschewed all forms of mastery and called for critical consciousness and collective action on the part of marginalized people at home and abroad. She concludes that in using a border-crossing, intersectional approach, Cooper successfully argues for theorizing from experience, develops inclusive methods of liberation, and crafts a vision of a fundamentally egalitarian social imaginary.

Review

May has written the first book to really situate Cooper as a radical intellectual. She elucidates not only Cooper's brilliant critique of racism and sexism, but her cross-disciplinary analysis of literature, education, religion, law and American culture. Most importantly, May establishes Cooper’s philosophy of liberation―one that is global, historically grounded, passionate, and lived. From now on, anyone teaching 20th century intellectual history must come to terms with Anna Julia Cooper. ―Robin D. G. Kelley, Columbia University, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

"May persuasively argues that Cooper’s philosophical ideas are much more revolutionary―radical even―and subversive of dominant ideology than previously judged. This book will become central to the scholarship on 19th and early 20th century African American women writers." ―Trudier Harris, UNC Chapel Hill, author of Saints, Sinners, Saviors: Strong Black Women in African American Literature

"May places Cooper in a rich political, philosophical and literary context in which her prescient work can at long last be fully appreciated. She enables readers to understand just how and why Cooper might have been misunderstood, and links such misunderstanding with some of the very political constraints under which Cooper labored. This promises to be the kind of book about which people will say, ‘Wow!  How can we have missed out on all this?’" ―Elizabeth V. Spelman, Smith College, author of Fruits of Sorrow: Framing Our Attention to Suffering

"May has accomplished a major feat: she has given one of the greatest philosophical and political thinkers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century her intellectual due." -- African American Review

One of the finest looking role-playing books ever published.
By smith
A beautifully detailed Late Medieval campaign world, well-written and largely historical with a dash of fantasy, covering everything from kingdoms and nobility to adventuring and daily life. Despite it's depth, it's essentially systemless and usable with any fantasy game, new or old. The book itself is nothing short of a high culture artifact, it's lavishly illustrated with excellent Medieval artwork, from centuries of artists, two and three pieces per page. In nearly 40 years of gaming, I've seen no other single book so completely saturate you, in the atmosphere of a campaign world. For those who believe they've grown tired of the Medieval European fantasy genre, this book should rekindle that wonder you had when you saw your first suit of armor. For those already in love with knights and castles, welcome home. Thanks Pundit and Dom!

Dark Albion is a very detailed resource of a pseudo-historical fantasy world set in England during the period of the War of the Roses ie. 1453-1485. I am really not interested in the Fantasy aspect of the book - my main interest being Historical Miniatures in the Late Medieval Period and in particularly the War of the Roses. My background and viewpoint being stated - this book is a fantastic resource for the War of the Roses and I highly recommend it ! Let me give you a short review with some comments on how I intend to use this resource.

The introduction outlines the authors' basic premise of Dark Albion: The Rose War. It is "a setting in a quasi-historical kingdom very similar to that of 15th Century England." The author also states that he had been educated as an historian; and his knowledge of the period is truly remarkable - it is what makes this book such a great resource. At this point the reader is given several things to keep in mind ( a setting of ground rules so-to-speak ) and the differences between Albion and our historical world.

The Gazetteer of Albion describes the Government, Religion, Magic, Minorities, Technology/Warfare and Dangers/Adventure that are in the country. The tweeks to the History and Geography by the Author keeps things pseudo-historical, but the names, locations etc. are 80-85% historical and I had very little trouble identifying the fact from fiction. Next all the regions of England Albion are presented with the history and background of each region. Accompanying each regions' review are maps, notes, cities, towns and castle names and information along with prominent Nobles in the area. The information in this section is almost overwhelming but it is presented in a well thought out manner and will be easy to find the referenced information. I intend to use this information as background to my Imagi-Nation and the various mini-campaigns and situations that I am envisioning. I would say that about 85-90% of this section will be useful to the historical gamer.

There is a Law and Justice in Albion section that that seems to be a pretty accurate description of late Medieval times. I will be the first to admit that I am no expert in this area but again I would estimate 75-80% being an accurate description of Medieval Law and Justice but the section will be very useful to flesh out story details in an Imagi-Nation. Topics covered in this section include handling Law and Punishment, Secular and Ecclesiastical Courts, Law Enforcement, Prison, Trials, Trial by Combat, Torture, Punishments Fines etc. All quite useful Medieval stuff.

A History of Albion section is richly packed with a lot of historical background information about 80-85% historical and covers the period 1453-1485. This will help to provide great background context material for an Imagi-Nation.

There is a section on Currency and Coinage which can be used as is for an Imagi-Nation. There is also economic information that covers Medieval wages and the costs of Medieval living - along with the ever present Medieval taxation practices. A lot of useful Medieval history and fact in this section.

Rounding out the Historical and Imagi-Nation usefulness there are several tables of Medieval Name generators. They will be just the ticket for a mini fictional campaign in my War of the Roses Imagi-Nation. Tables are available for Anglish Names, Common Female Anglish names, Examples of Last Names for Upper Gentry and the Knightly Class, Scots Names - Male and Female and Last Names, and lastly Welsh Male and Female common names.

There are many other sections that are aimed at the Fantasy World that have concepts and ideas that can also be useful in an Imagi-Nation setting but that I will not cover here.

In conclusion I cannot recommend "Dark Albion: The Rose War" enough. It is richly packed with Medieval and War of the Roses information, gaming ideas and aides.

This is a fantastic product. It it so entertaining to read and you can learn about the Rose War while you're doing it. I don't think I would use this for a campaign as I'm not real partial to playing in a real world setting. But much can be taken out and used for a home-brew setting. And I will say this came real close to me thinking about trying a real world game. Rpg Pundit did a great job writing it and DOM did and equally fantastic job putting it all together.

Humanitarian Violence: The U.S. Deployment of Diversity (Difference Incorporated), by Neda Atanasoski

When is a war not a war? When it is undertaken in the name of democracy, against the forces of racism, sexism, and religious and political persecution? This is the new world of warfare that Neda Atanasoski observes in Humanitarian Violence, different in name from the old imperialism but not so different in kind. In particular, she considers U.S. militarism—humanitarian militarism—during the Vietnam War, the Soviet-Afghan War, and the 1990s wars of secession in the former Yugoslavia.

What this book brings to light—through novels, travel narratives, photojournalism, films, news media, and political rhetoric—is in fact a system of postsocialist imperialism based on humanitarian ethics. In the fiction of the United States as a multicultural haven, which morally underwrites the nation’s equally brutal waging of war and making of peace, parts of the world are subject to the violence of U.S. power because they are portrayed to be homogeneous and racially, religiously, and sexually intolerant—and thus permanently in need of reform. The entangled notions of humanity and atrocity that follow from such mediations of war and crisis have refigured conceptions of racial and religious freedom in the post–Cold War era. The resulting cultural narratives, Atanasoski suggests, tend to racialize ideological differences—whereas previous forms of imperialism racialized bodies. In place of the European racial imperialism, U.S. settler colonialism, and pre–civil rights racial constructions that associated racial difference with a devaluing of nonwhite bodies, Humanitarian Violence identifies an emerging discourse of race that focuses on ideological and cultural differences and makes postsocialist and Islamic nations the potential targets of U.S. disciplining violence.

Review
"With clear and astute arguments that are executed with force and lucidity, Neda Atanasoski offers a wonderfully rich comparative study of postsocialist regions whose histories have been intertwined in various ways with American discursive and material practices and politics. The sustained focus on these kinds of U.S. historical impulses and their complex connections to Eastern Europe is a highly original and a much-needed intervention." —Katarzyna Marciniak, Ohio University

"Humanitarian Violence is transnational and interdisciplinary scholarship at its best. It offers a much needed deeper look at the constitution of the modern West, while at the same time convincingly arguing for the continued importance of literary analysis and suggesting ways in which this analysis can be related to visual genres such as photojournalism, film, and digital art." —Fatima El-Tayeb, University of California, San Diego
