WOW!

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

What a beautifully written collection of poems

I must say I have really enjoyed the poems I've read thus far. Anna Journey has an expansive mind and knows how to use it. The texture and layering of the poems is really well done and I got this feeling of nostalgia for the beginning of the poems once I reached the end. It was like each one is built on its own mini relationship. Anyone who enjoys contemporary poetry should give this book a gander.

Okay, so I read Scarecrow Returns last night. It's a hodgepodge of Wikipedia articles, recycled conspiracy theories, insanely bad prose, stupid characters and some of the worst dialogue ever attempted in the English language.

And I LOVED it.

Matthew Reilly owns the market in so-bad-they're-brilliant action books. You pick up a Matthew Reilly book as a kind of mental shiatsu massage: just sit back and let Mr. Reilly pummel your brain with one insane scene after another, each of which is delivered in prose so reliably crude that you can't wait to see how he'll debase the art of fiction next. And like shiatsu, these individually painful experiences combine into a wonderful kind of bliss. After three or four hundred pages, Reilly's writing can completely obliterate your mind and relieve you of such troubling burdens as thought, logic, empathy, and standards. When you finally put down one of his novels, you are mentally limp, scrubbed clean, and ready to take on something new.

For people who are interested in avoiding plot spoilers, you might not want to read the rest of this review. But honestly, you wouldn't pick up a Matthew Reilly book if you were interested being surprised by the plot. The plot is totally irrelevant. Scarecrow Returns could be a retelling of The Old Man and the Sea or a newly revised version of The Joy of Cooking, and it wouldn't make the slightest difference as long as Matthew Reilly was writing it. The only relevant question in a Matthew Reilly book is this: How much insane action can Reilly pack in betwen the covers? Scarecrow Returns delivered. Imagine taking the paragraph below and expanding it into 360 pages, without wasting a single word on character development, realism, research, good dialogue, transition scenes, or anything else that impedes the author's ability to blow stuff up. To speed things along and avoid wasting your time on useless descriptions that don't involve violence (i.e., prose), most of the locations are rendered as simple line drawings and diagrams in between chapters. You won't have to worry about missing a point, because Reilly is a master of non-subtle emphasis: italics, exclamation points, single word paragraphs, and when all else fails, use of the sentence: "The sight was absolutely incredible." And even with all these nods to extreme efficiency in delivering action, there is still a shortage of space.

In a 360-page book, the main character barely had time to: use a friendly robot to shoot down a helicopter; use a speedboat to escape the destruction of a French submarine; kill 70 - 80 people with various machine guns; blow up a control tower with plastic explosives and survive the tower's collapse by bracing himself against a mattress; jump a fuel truck off a cement wall and arrest its fall with two Maghooks; destroy a hovering V-22 Osprey with a falling truck; jump a cement mixer into an airplane and then fly the airplane; fall in love with a French assassin whose Maghook is longer than his; board an airplane using his Maghook while driving a Jeep down a runway off the edge of a cliff; exit a flying airplane in a different Jeep but use his Maghook to reboard the airplane while the Jeep falls into an iceberg; throw a fake-sounding nuclear bomb (red uranium?) out of an airplane into the ocean before it ignites a rocket fuel vapor cloud that will destroy China; get captured; get tortured; watch as a friend is tortured with a forklift; watch an acquaintance's head get eaten by rats; escape captivity thanks to the tender friendship he developed with a robot (which robot, by the way, is one of the most developed characters in the book), and kill 70 - 80 additional people with various machine guns; storm some place called Bear Island with the help of an experimental submersible speedboat; kill 4 - 5 mutant, highly-aggressive polar bears leftover from a singularly implausible Soviet weapons program; storm some place called Acid Island; get shot down in an airplane by a Soviet missile; drive a crashed airplane into a river; blast a cement truck through the wall of a floating, crashed airplane; launch a floating crashed airplane off a waterfall by retracting its landing gear; kill a drug-crazed soldier while several hundred feet under Arctic water inside of a crashed airplane; perform first aid upon / woo a French assassin while also paddling a life raft back into battle at a secret Russian arctic island weapons base; have text message conversations with a guy in Washington, D.C. while shooting people with a machine gun above the Arctic Circle; unravel (by using a bullet-proof wrist-mounted computer that apparently gets wi-fi anywhere and never runs low on battery power) a 30 year old CIA plot to keep America on top by incinerating everyone in China; defy logic, gravity, and the manufacturer's instructions for his belt; survive the direct impact of a Soviet nuclear missile; meet the President; note that Hollywood films had really gone downhill since "Predator"; finally get the French off his back for those harmless previous incidents in prior novels where he blew up a French submarine (Ice Station) and a French aircraft carrier (Scarecrow); get a medal; see a down-to-earth therapist in Baltimore; and go out for dinner and drinks with a French assassin, whose name in English, it turns out, means Fox.

And that's without even mentioning anything the Scarecrow's loyal sidekick Mother did.

A return to form.

This is my first book review, so please bear with me.

I have been a fan of Matthew Reilly's books for a long while and enjoyed them thoroughly, whilst still being able to acknowledge their shortcomings. I was dissappointed with 5 Greatest Warriors, and to a lesser extent with 6 Sacred Stones, as I believed they were becoming a little too "over the top". I know, this is Matthew Reilly I'm talking about, but these ones should almost have been comic books rather than fiction books. I was somewhat concerned that this new book may have suffered from a similar fate, but fortunately this hasn't been the case.

The return of Scarecrow I feel has been a return to form for Matthew Reilly. The same formula is present, go-to-woe action adventure with over the top stunts and set-pieces. Bad villains and good heroes. It's not Shakespeare, but it's not supposed to be. The character development of the leads is a welcome addition, exploring some of Scarecrow's past, as well as how he has gotten over the events of previous books.

Overall this book is a easy prospect to review. If you enjoy his books, particularly those from the Scarecrow series, you will enjoy this. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Scarecrow or Area 7 (probably more due to my current frame of mind than anything, maybe also since I read it on Kindle and I'm not sure if this alters the experience of reading), but it is definitely a fun cover-to-cover read. If you didn't like his previous books then move along, nothing to see here.

If you are new to Matthew Reilly then this isn't the place to start. Get "Ice Station" out, it is a great book and not at all out-of-date. Non-stop action is a signature of his books, and they are hard to put down, so if you have some spare time for some a good read they are definitely recommended.

Scarecrow and the army of thieves

Now I don't want to join the growing band of people whinging about extravagant kindle prices, but in this case I have to register my complaint. Did you know that this book is available as a hardback for $20 or under in all of Australias big Department stores. I would have loved to have bought it on Kindle for $9.99, as I cosider it a once only read style of book, not a collectable. But at 26 bucks you just have to be joking. I'll be off to Target tomorrow to buy it. The new Ian Rankin and David Baldacci books are also available for the same price as kindle editions. You're pricing yourself out of the market. I've reduced myself to buying .99 cent unknown authors on my kindle and have gone back to hard copies for new releases. The Kindle editions simply aren't worth what you are trying to screw out of people for them.

He received his Ph.D. in business economics and master's degree in business economics from the Claremont Graduate School, and MBA from the University of Santa Clara, and a B.A. in industrial engineering from Michigan State University.

Dr. Alan Dennis holds the John T. Chambers Chair of Internet Systems in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Dr. Dennis has won numerous awards for teaching data communications and networking and for his research on collaboration and the Internet. He is an Associate Editor for MIS Quarterly and serves as the Executive Editor for MIS Quarterly Executive. He received his Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Arizona, his MBA from Queen's University in Ontario, and his Bachelor of Computer Science from Acadia University in Nova Scotia.

Decent but Outdated

The layout of this book could have used some work, and I understand the later editions do a better job, but it nevertheless provided a foundation of networking and datacomm principles. The material is out of date, so since there is a newer edition out, I would recommend it over this edition.

I was required to purchase this book at LSU for a class. It contains great information, but like many books chosen by professors it is sorely over-priced for information that can be learned from much cheaper reference books. Lose two stars for ripping off poor students.

No online version or reference citations available.

Buyer beware. This is an excellent, probably the most complete, textbook of general thoracic. However, buyers should be aware of the fact that despite the advertising and title there is no on line version available at the Elsevier Expert Consult web site. I attempted to redeem my code and it was rejected. I contacted their customer service/technical assistance and was told that they no longer support this book. This is particularly irksome since only the Key References are available at the end of each chapter. The references in the body of each chapter are only available "online" which is actually not available. therefore a substantial part of the benefit of owning the book is absent.

What is civilization? How has the word come to take on a hierarchical meaning -- the "civilized" versus the "primitive"? Inventing Western Civilization is about the idea of civilization and how the concept has been appropriated by different groups at different times in order to defend their status. Anthropologist Tom Patterson shows how classism, sexism, and racism were as integral to the appearance of "civilized" society in Western Europe as inequality and alienation. He explains, clearly and simply, how civilization (and the process of "civilizing" and "being civilized") has been closely tied to the rise of capitalism in Western Europe, the development of social classes, and the creation of "others" who are distinguished by their socially constructed appearances, behaviors, or essences. -- Midwest Book Review

Marvelous achievement! Quick, clear, and powerful!

In the short span of 123 pages, Thomas Patterson delivers a stunning and succinct overview of "Western civilization" and its encounters with "savages," different "races," and the Other. He recounts briefly yet movingly the Spanish onslaught of Native Americans, ancient Greek notions of barbarism, the British colonization of Ireland, and more.
But Patterson only gives the briefest sketch of these meetings--he is more concerned with the ever-changing ideologies with which some Europeans justify the wholesale looting, enslavement, murder, and colonization of others around the globe. He portrays conservative and liberal ideas, as well as racial and economic notions. He sketches the involvement of science with racism and colonialism, and he brings to life the deeply classist and sexist hatreds of Europeans elites--hatreds which easily translated into colonialism (inferiors and feminine types around the world "needed" to be ruled).
Remarkably, Patterson manages to find space for critiques of "civilization," both from within European societies and from those they encountered. In this way agency is not restricted to a few rich, White Europeans, and the dialogue is constant and contested.
I assigned this book to my upper division college students, and they comprehended and thrived on this book. It is quick, clear, and powerful--truly a marvelous contribution. I will surely assign it again. Highest recommendation!

THIS BOOK MAY SHATTER YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

If you truly believe that Western civilization is the worldwide and most complete civilization, while all others are parochial, then this book may shatter your perspective.

In "Inventing Western Civilization," Thomas C. Patterson suggested that "civilized people are obsessed with their uncivilized kin and neighbors--[so] they call them savages, barbarians or the `masses' who lack their polish, refinement, and sophistication; who... have moved en mass into their midst."

Patterson develops his argument and explores the idea of civilization in only five short chapters. He examines the constantly changing "social and political conditions in which civilization is produced and deployed."

The work questions conventional knowledge about the idea of western civilization created by white, male, elites to preserve and perpetuate their power in society.

this really makes you think

This book was an assigned book in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course. Although the premise of the book has nothing to do with the field of cultural anthro, reading it helped me put the notion of "civilization" and such ideas as "culture" and "race" into perspective. Definitely not a book to take to the beach, but a good read for those looking to expand their knowledge of political institutions.
