About the Author
Paul David Magriel, Jr. (known in gambling circles as X-22) was World Backgammon Champion in 1978. A former New York State Junior Chess Champion, Paul was a Courant Institute Fellow while still an undergraduate at N.Y.U. and went on to win a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study probability at Princeton University. He was a professor at the Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Technical Institute) before becoming a full-time backgammon and poker player. Paul was also the backgammon columnist for The New York Times and has won more major backgammon tournaments than any other player. He is widely considered the games foremost theorist and teacher and one of its premier players. Renee Magriel Roberts, Ph.D. is a former correspondent for the Boston Globe and owns Clock & Rose Press.

Fantastic Backgammon Book

This book lives up to its reputation as a classic. I've rarely read technical books that are so clearly written and so well illustrated. Magriel provides both before and after illustrations for ideal moves, followed by complete explanations for why some moves are better than others. Section one is identical to his "Beginning Backgammon" book, and the rest of the book is for more advanced play. If you buy the book, make sure you are getting this one (405 pages) not the shorter one.
I've not read Robertie's two volume set for backgammon, but I have read his 501 classic backgammon situations. While this is a great book too, Magriel is the better teacher and writer.
Also, there are plenty of reasonably priced used copies of the hardback version of the book. I bought mine through Amazon used books postings for only $ more than the recent paperback re-release.

Excellent text from beginner to expert

This book greatly improved my game, and I recommend it to anyone who wants one of the BEST backgammon books available. Don't let the price put you off. If you budgeted for 2 books, forget both of them and get this one. I've read this for 4 months and still won't loan it out as I still haven't worn the 'new' off of it. Gives basic frameworks and explains more technical areas of the game. This book will drastically improve your game.

Difficult Text, but Fundamental to My Studies

This book was recommended to me as part of my preparation for doctoral research. I purchased it and have slowly slogged my way through it. Kenneth Burke was a master rhetorician, so this text is not for the faint of heart. It was the perfect book to add to my growing library.

How to read Burke for those interested in rhetoric

First things first: I've been reading Burke as an undergrad, and make no claim to understand the whole of his thought. I won't go into any long-winded, ego-massaging philosophical critique: I'll save that for a term paper. But I do have some ideas about reading him that might help dispel other reviewers' claims that Burke is either obscure or unimportant. Anyone interested in rhetoric should find Burke at least interesting, and, if you plan to study rhetoric, there's no getting around him. This is mainly for other undergrads like myself (or anyone) coming to Burke for the first time.

-Read his Grammar of Motives first or alongside the Rhetoric. This lays out the "dramtistic pentad"(the combinations of act, scene, agent, agency, purpose), which is basically Burke's shorthand for any one combination of social relations with others or environment. For example, if one acts under certain conditions, such an act would be considered under the "act-scene ratio." These formulations of the combination (hence "Grammar") of relationships are largely implicit in the Rhetoric, but once you have the pentad down you won't have too many problems recognizing the structure of a given argument in the Rhetoric. (If helps, you might consider the fact that Burke wanted to create a modern "trivium"-- grammar, rhetoric, logic-- updated for the linguistic turn, thus substituting the symbolic for logic (we encounter the world through symbols, not strict reasoned arguments... but back to more important matters:)
-His idea of "identification" is key: Burke defines rhetoric by this term, not by persuasion (although persuasion is implied in identification... read about it for yourself), and most of his most abstract stuff stems the consideration of an agent identifying with someone/something else. As said before, the pentad lays the groundwork for identification, so keep this in mind.
-The roots of his epistemological critique originate from his critique of substance, the essential make-up of an agent, argument, etc. If you've missed the section "Paradox of Substance" in the Grammar, then you'll be lost.
-His argumentative style is anecdotal: he'll take a given topic (Hitler, for instance) and analyze it accordingly. This can make the reading seem disjointed, but it should cohere if you see that Burke is just applying his basic argument to a wide array of topics. I can see where this could get annoying if you already know what he's talking about (he does love to elaborate on one general theme with multiple examples for pages at a time), but for me it often clarified what I didn't understand before in the more abstract parts. He never assumes you'll come up with examples on your own, which for a student is a good thing, I think.
-This is the groundwork, like the Grammar was for the Rhetoric, for the Symbolic, which was never written. So if he seems terse on the "symbol-using animal" thing, that's why.

In other words, Burke wasn't a one-book kind of guy. His thought is scattered across multiple books, but this does not mean it's scattered thought.

So, those are just some helpful tips that have helped at least one undergrad. I hope Burke comes across as less an obstacle than someone the works of whom are both rewarding and enjoyable to read (unlike so much of modern theory).

Just one note: it was mentioned in one the arguments below that Burke was some sort of postmodern irrationalist. His epigraph to the Grammar is "ad bellum purificandum"-- "towards the purification of war." Meaning, of course, getting rid of it, because for Burke there is no such thing as a pure substance (again, read about that...). He seems to want to take the messy world of symbols that we use and make them more readily understandable in their functions, and thus more controllable.

"A Rhetoric of Motives" was published in 1950, five years after "A Grammar of Motives," the first volume of a planned trilogy "On Human Relations" that was never officially completed. Having established the critical vocabulary of the dramatistic pentad in the first volume, this second work explores how all forms of human activities, whether linguistic or not, are modes of symbolizing. Specifically, Burke focuses on the relationship between persuasion and identification (hence, the focus on rhetoric rather than grammar). This is where his definition of man as the symbol-using/misusing animal comes into play. Within this context, the goal of the critic is to interpret human symbolizing in whatever arena it can be found (which necessarily means all human interactions) in order to explain human motivations.
Part I "The Range of Rhetoric" sets up the key Burkeian concepts of Identification and Consubstantiality. Part II "Traditional Principles of Rhetoric" reworks those concepts into Burke's framework, using diverse texts from Dante and Machiavelli to Carlyle and Rochefoucauld to support the analysis. Part III on "Order" develops positive, dialectical and ultimate terms to establish the idea of forms that are paradigmatic of the rhetorical process as well as those that are better termed caricatures. Students of rhetoric and social theory should certainly read "A Grammar of Motives" before making their way through this volume, although a thorough appreciation of Burke would require starting with his pre-war "trilogy" of "Counter-Statement," "Permanence and Change," and "Attitudes Towards History." That middle volume is especially important in light of Burke's argument in "A Rhetoric of Motives."
Burke never wrote "A Symbolic of Motives," which was to complete the trilogy. Both "Language As Symbolic Action" and "A Rhetoric of Religion" are sometimes represented as the third volume in some embryonic form, which is about as valid as such considerations can go. My argument would be that Burke's earlier works are much better sources of enlightenment and inspiration than either of those particular volumes.

The Brazilian Brigand, Lampiao

This is the only book so far on Lampiao in English. It is a riveting account. Besides his ugly side toward informants who ratted on him, Chandler mentions Lampiao had a humane side toward those who supported him and his brigands. Chandler also describes some of the tactics the Bandit King used to elude the "volantes" (police) --- walking backwards over their footprints, and wearing animalskins on their shoes to avoid leaving footprints, among others. But for how long can one continue to literally get away with murder?? The atrocities he committed on his enemies are squeamish to read (I won't mention them, here). For these gory acts, it is no wonder he and his gang met their grisly end in Angicos. Also, the book is very descriptive about life in Northeastern Brazil during the 1920's and '30's. While reading, I've tried to envision these isolated areas with their arid, rough terrain. An interesting, yet, at times, disturbing, biography.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).
