About the Author
Born on Easter Sunday, the oldest of eight children, Dani Sinclair began her official writing career when her sister asked her to write a romance novel. A latecomer to the genre, she combines her love for romance with her need to write suspense and humour.Her first published novel, MYSTERY BABY, debuted in May 1996. Since that time she's sold fifteen books to Harlequin Intrigue, one to Harlequin Temptation, and two Special Projects. In addition, she's written a daily on-line serial for Harlequin's Web page. Her third Intrigue novel, BETTER WATCH OUT, was a RITA finalist in the Romantic Suspense category. In March 2001, Romantic Times nominated Dani for a Career Achievement award in the Series Romantic Suspense category. They also nominated her book, THE SPECIALIST, for the Reviewers' Choice Best Harlequin Intrigue of 2000. Dani has been profiled in The Journal Newspaper in West Virginia, Romantic Times Magazine, Gothic Journal, and Harlequin's Reader Service Heart to Heart overseas. The 3rd book in the series...

This is the third book in the Heartskeep series. Alexis Ryder has just found, from her dying father, that she was adopted illegally. She sets off with a bloody suitcase full of money to find her real family. She meets and falls for Wyatt, a cop in the town where her family is. He mistakes her for one of her sisters and she lets him believe the lie so that she can find out more about her family and the reason why there are people after her.
I enjoyed this book, especially the romance between the characters. The final book in the series usually ties it all up nicely, but I thought that in this case it was a little too pat. It wasn't that hard to figure out who did it, and all was forgiven a little too easily. A good summer read.

Better than I expected

This is a Mills and Boon Silhouette, ‘Intrigue’ romance. That probably means a lot to those who read these books regularly. As a writer, and a bloke, I read this one to see whether it was a genre I could write. So, bear all that in mind as you read this review.

It is, of course, a love story. But it’s also a lot more. The element of crime is strong, as are the elements of family and social injustice. A lot of readers condemn these books out of hand, assuming they’re poorly written and formulaic. I found this to be neither of those things.

There is suspense, mystery, tension, both sexual and general, and there is, of course, a burgeoning romance. It’s this final element that’s formulaic. The reader understands that the two main protagonists are destined for each other and recognises the barriers placed for them to cross in order to arrive at the essential happy ending (no, I don’t think that’s a spoiler: a romance of this nature has a happy ending; they all do).

As for the writing? It’s tense where it should be, description isn’t overdone, the action scenes are well handled and the relationships, complex and multi-faceted, are presented cleverly. I found the plot a little over-cooked and the author seemed to have found herself in something of a maze, if the denouement narrative is a guide. The ending reminded me a bit of Agatha Christie’s Poirot and his habit of describing his method of detection to the gathered guilty and innocent.

For me, character is the most important factor in a book. The individuals who people these pages are well drawn and various. That they can be slotted into various stereotypes is inevitable, given the narrow guidelines determined by the publishers, but that doesn’t prevent these particular players from being real people. I enjoyed the strong female lead and the object of her desire fitted in well with her hopes with enough potential flaws to make the reader wonder just enough. The minor players were also well constructed.

There is inevitably, given the specifics set by the publishers, rather more telling than showing than is good for the book. And some of the twists and turns seem to have been inserted ‘on the hoof’ rather than planned; but I can hardly complain at that, since I do it all the time myself.

But, in spite of its intended female readership and the slant it must take for such an audience, I enjoyed the read and found it largely satisfying. For those who care, there remains an unanswered question, of course. The answer is that I have already written a book containing much of what we find here, but I couldn’t write for this specific genre. It’s too confined and controlled for the way I write. But that’s not a reflection of the ability of this author; she’s worked within the constraints admirably and turned out a pretty good read that, I imagine, will sit very happily with those who more regularly read this type of fiction.

So, if you enjoy your romance with intrigue, mystery and some threat facing the heroine, you’ll get good value and plenty of entertainment from this one. Give it a go.

Excellent Resource

This is a terrific book for anyone interested in the Western Oracular traditions, and in their current reconstructed practices. It builds on Paxson's other books, in particular the how-to Pathwork book, Trance-portation. (Trance-portation acts as the workbook to this textbook, as it were.) Filled with accurate, well-researched history on the ancient world, it also relates the history of experimentation and re-discovery of modern Heathens and other Pagans working to re-create this tradition of oracular work for the community. (This book is particularly helpful in defining the difference between divination and oracles.) Very, very useful, and very clear in its presentation.

Charlie's eyes (and vision) become square through a surfeit of TV watching. Clever color illustrations show the world as Charlie sees it: everything from toothpaste to tomatoes to his own tears are cube-shaped. The only cure is to unplug the TV and read, draw pictures, do puzzles, "look at the sky and wonder why." Although the story is pointedly didactic, it is handled with a light touch, and the well-rendered pictures carry off the farce. As good-humored social commentary, this may not convert TV addicts into born-again readers, but it should provoke chuckles among the target audience and their parents. Many in the audience will find themselves nodding in recognition. Ages 8-10.

A powerful book about the influence television has on kids

I just heard this story read aloud at a teacher's workshop and was dismayed to hear it is no longer in print. The story powerfully shows readers how TV negatively affects children's creativity and "vision". A great story for parents and teachers to share with each other and with their children. The illustrations are colorful and humorous and will appeal to readers of every age. This book has a message which has never been needed to be heard more than today. If you are concerned about the negative affects of television viewing on children this book's for you. Share it with all you know!! A gem!!

The current status criteria contain descent-based rules akin to blood quantum that are particularly discriminatory against women and their descendants.

Another great book in the Nightfall series

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed hearing Zorin part of the story. It helped me to understand him and his choices. It was nice to learn more about his past and lost love. You got to see how his past helped define him. I look forward to seeing more of him in the next book.

A great novella for fans of this series!

Night of Nyx is the first novella in the Nightfall Chronicles. The events in the novella take place during those of the first half of House of Ravens. It's mainly told via Zorin's point of view, however some chapters are from Varian's point of view. Rather than seem redundant, Night of Nyx helps readers understand Zorin's character more. Varian's motives also seem a lot clearer, transforming his role significantly from that of the villian we saw him as in House of Ravens to that of a misunderstood hero.

Very little is left to desire in this novella. The story is fast-paced, informative, and an appropriate length for the amount of content being delivered.

I'd recommend Night of Nyx to fans of the Nightfall Chronicles and fans of science fiction, adventure, fantasy, and dystopian stories. It is appropriate for young teens, but does contain some graphic descriptions of violence.

Overall, I loved this glimpse into Zorin's soul. His actions and reactions make so much more sense to me now. He's much more likeable a character than I had imagined. Varian's character was the most changed for me, however. I couldn't help seeing the bad guy he made himself out to be, but now I know why for the most part, and that has truly reshaped him. I'm truly pleased with this novella and I can't wait for the next book.

Fantastic!

This small novella is a perfect companion to the Nightfall Chronicles and for those who want to get to know Zorin more! The authors wrote a nice insight to the thoughts of Zorin, and also his reasons for helping both Scarlett and Nightfall. Pllus, I loved how the authors included the point of view of King Varian! It created this excitement that is making me crave the next book in the series! Personally, this is one of the best novellas I have read on the content of further character insight.
