This superb collection of Bakshi's background and his historic animations is a MUST for anyone interested in the art of cartooning. Wizards, Fritz the Cat and other films of his have become cult movies and they are all excellently featured in this heavy coffee table book.

Overdue Chronicle of an Animation Master!!

Very pleased to report that my copy of Bakshi's new book "Unfiltered" arrived yesterday via Amazon.com. The pre-order price was $25 which was a amazing for a $40 list hardcover book from Amazon.

The book is insane! Everything you could ask for about his life, history, artistic phases from early cartooning straight through Harlem Shuffle and Spicy City. So pleased to have my Bakshi fix in one "huge" book!

Mostly enjoyed understanding his life and the doodles and art that is sprinkled throughout. Also enjoyed the dedicated sections tied to his movies. Heavy Traffic and American Pop are my favs here.

If you don't have it...get it. What a blessing...

Arrived on time and in very good condition. I saved a lot of money buying the 7th ed. since the 8th is so expensive and the material is pretty much the same, chapters and everything. I am very happy with this purchase. :D

An extremely influential read.. highly recommended for anybody interested in better understanding what propagates today's environmental issues and how to fix them. Specifically using a psychological lens to view these problems, you're sure to learn something new, interesting, and personally applicable. The theory and ideas presented in this book can span a multitude of academic and worldly fields. Definitely a book I'll keep on my bookshelf.

What I appreciate most about this textbook is the readability and practicality of the psychological terms and information presented. Many theories are rooted in real world examples that help the reader understand the application of these theories in everyday experiences. I find myself consistently drawing on information learned from this textbook in both academic and non-academic settings. This realization is consistent with the underlying focus on the importance of systems thinking highlighted throughout this text when understanding the psychology of sustainable behavior and living. Overall, this is a particularly useful textbook for someone new to psychology and interested in sustainability.

I think this book does an excellent job for students and parents/adults alike, to see just how influential and positive Father Junipero Serra really was. He was a man who had extraordinary vision for the lives of the people he touched. He was committed in his faith, and this biography depicts this strongly. Also, students will learn of his fortitude in tough times, as well as his ability to find the good in everyone and in every situation. The illustrations are rich, full of life, yet the text is still inviting to younger readers. After you come to the end of this book, you feel like you had a small glimpse into the life of an incredible individual. Though a bit long for some younger readers, this is a must read for anyone interested in the birth and formation of California Missions.

I have many problems with the divorce I started 6 years ago. The statistical information, research, details, and background information of what divorce does to families is very helpful. The way these are helpful to me is that they show what the results have been with many of the particular choices that divorces have raised in the past, and what current trends in these are showing.
The descriptions that are given about what feelings children endure are gripping. I came to truly understand what our three have had to bury in their beings. Now, before its too late, however, I have unique insight that will enable me to help them --hopefully with their father.
I cannot write too much about the value of knowing what divorce does to children, how to help them heal, how to take charge of the situation that seems hopeless, and what to NOT do.

Should be required reading for all parents going through a divorce. This book really puts the kids first, and discusses how children of varying ages will react differently to divorce. With a few exceptions most scientists now believe that the global warming of recent decades is a function of human activities and the rising level of greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere as a result. But such dynamic periods of environmental change have a destabilising impact, encouraging the onslaught of hazardous phenomena.

'Natural Hazards and Environmental Change' highlights and critically evaluates the accumulating evidence for an intimate link between natural hazards and environmental change. Surveying a unique collection of themes, this link is examined from two viewpoints: first, how environmental change can contribute to an increased level of hazardous natural phenomenon, and second how natural hazards may themselves lead to environmental change on a local, regional or even global scale. Through exploring the often complex and dynamic relationships between environmental change and the frequency and severity of hazards (such as floods, windstorms, landslides, asteroid and comet impacts and volcanic eruptions), the book also introduces the reader to some of the more speculative aspects of the relationship: how, for example, variations in sea level are linked to the level of volcanic activity and how a warmer, wetter climate might lead to landslides and tsunami formation at oceanic islands. With dramatically rising temperatures and sea levels now inevitable, as well as a growing global population that is becoming increasingly vulnerable to hazardous geophysical phenomena, the world of the 21st century is likely to be an increasingly dangerous one.

Natural Hazards and Environmental Change is a scientifically sound and well-written book giving a comprehensive overview of modern hazard investigations. Especially interesting is the main theme, i.e. the thesis that anthropogenic factors are the main reason for these alarming events. This might have a positive effect in stimulating desirable social and political reactions. I am glad to have this useful book in my own library.

Natural Hazards

In eight well-written chapters, McGuire, Mason and Kilburn have produced a book which is distinctly different from the legion of others currently in the market place. Geology, Earth Science and science geography students should own a copy, as should any academic teaching in this field.

Hysterical academics

Global warming proponents have had a good time publishing hysterical predictions of imminent disaster, and McGuire leads the pack. This book was published in 2002, and in the ten years since then, the major disasters have been entirely natural and totally unrelated to alleged climate change. Recent tsunamis occurred along known crustal faults, and have been the most serious disasters in terms of loss of life. To start with, these academics accept the flawed conclusions of the 2001 IPCC report, a report now known to be biased and flawed, as the Climategate messages showed (with the biased hockey stick graph, for example). The frequency or intensity of hurricanes has not increased at all (one of the results the authors predicted with confidence), and if anything, world temperatures have fallen rather than risen. The authors whip up hysterical nonsense when discussing other "imminent" catastrophes as well, such as meteorite strikes, and giant landslips, none of which have come to pass. So much for their predictions. Their book has the superficial look of a serious academic treatise, but the contents are very seriously flawed. For example, when discussing the historic record, they totally ignore the fact that past disasters or storms were frequently under-reported, and only the very worst reached the record books. Such a naive and gullible approach to such a serious subject undermines the credibility of this work, and it is best avoided for the hysterical clap-trap it surely remains.

Natural hazards considered under climate change scenarios

The authors are from the Benfield Grieg Hazard Research Centre and the Dept. of Space and Climate Physics (all University College London). The book has been published in 2002, and is therefore heavily based on the results of the 3rd assessment report of 2001 by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), who upgraded their temperature rise forecasts to 8 degrees Celcius by the end of the century. The natural hazards in this book are described in the light of IPCC's forecasts.

The book is very readable (thanks to the clear writing, a transparent outline and a summary at the start of each chapter).

Windstorms are described to anthropogenic climate change and are shown to have the potential for large changes for relatively small changes in the general climate. Its natural patterns of climate variability are presented, amongst which ENSO, NAO, and PNA (Pacific North American teleconnection). The latest studies are presented which try to observe and predict the frequency and severity of extreme windstorms on a spatial and temporal scale.

River and coastal floods under global warming are examined. Most research on river floods has concentrated on changes in observed precipitation and prediction methods, but the authors also present non-climatic factors involving human influences on the river basin. Coastal flooding from tropical and extratropical storms under sea level change is investigated, as well as sea temperature changes (heat - and cold waves).

The 1999 Venezuela landslides, causing 50 000 fatalities, have put this undervalued natural hazard on the agenda again. The authors concentrate on the water accumulation below the surface of unstable slopes. The landslide's rheological properties (which resist the movement) are studied under environmental change.

Sea level change is discussed under the uncertainties of response to warming of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and the effect of CO2 gas mitigation in the coming decades. The effect of sea level rise on submarine landslides and as a consequence ocean-wide tsunami is analysed. Coastal erosion and other geomorphological effects of sea level rise are left out here.

A very interesting chapter on asteroid and comet impacts as initiator of environmental change is included in the book. Time domain simulations of a 20km/s impact in a 4 km deep ocean are presented (and comparable to the Deep Impact scenario ([...]

The book ends with some results from a recent paper in Science (v 289, p 2068-74, DR Easterling et al) on different forecasts of climate extremes. The authors plead for political will from industrialised countries such as USA, Japan and Australia to invert their increase in gas emissions before the hazardous aspects of climatic shift make themselves felt.

The book is divided into three major parts.

"Part I, Building Blocks" includes eight chapters that form the foundation of the role-playing game that is developed in the book. These chapters cover subjects like Windows Forms, bitmaps, sprite animation, user input, collision detection, and similar core subjects.

"Part II, Game World" includes five chapters devoted to building the game engine components needed to manage and render the game world in which the player will live. The core of this game world is a tiled scroller and a level editor.

"Part III, Gameplay" includes seven chapters that develop all of the gameplay components of the role-playing game that make the game truly playable. Very good book

This book is great straight from the beginning. The introduction gets you excited for the rest of the book. Over all the book shows you how to create a fully functional RPG engine for free. None of the tools used in the book require you to purchase them. The author walks you through step by step how to recreate the game. Not everything is covered, but you learn a lot for the size of the book. The engine it self is a pretty advanced 2D engine with plenty of room for customization and expansion. The book also makes a great companion to C# Game Programming for Teens. With the other book you can expand a little on the game adding dungeons with much of the code being similar its not too hard to rewrite it for one or the other. Just like the C# book it comes with many tools that you can use to customize the game without even writing new code. The only flaw I see in this book is it is a little fast paced for someone new to programming. Some sections you might have to reread to understand, but the author tries to make it simple for everyone. I suggest having at least some experience with visual basic to help you out. I have not complete the book but look forward to learning new things and expanding on the game.

Very good book, it does teach well

I am a programmer for over 30 years now, got started because my mother would not buy me a Video Game system (Atari 2600) so at the age of 12 I bought a Timex Sinclair and wrote my own games. This was very fun and rewarding even as a kid, now it has turned into a lucrative career. I bought this book so my kids can have the same experience. I have been going thru the book with them and I find the book rather basic (which is good), even thought it is sold as an intermediate book. I guess it is sold that way because it does not completly hold your hand as some basic books do, but I see this as very good because it early on gets the kids using VS's built in error checking to fix mistakes. Thank you Jonathan for making this book, it was just what I needed.

Seems to be a good book. My son is reading it and using it to write a video game. We had some problems downloading the 'source code' from the book, but I emailed the author and got a quick accurate response. I'm glad he helped us out, otherwise we would not have liked the book much at all. As it stands, it is a very useful book.

Learning to play again at the age of 59+

Folks,

I started playing - or at least trying when I was in the third grade. I didn't play much beyond two more years due to lousy instructors and even lousier music picks. Life passed on, and finally, I came upon these books. I purchased all three of this series and started out fresh. I've now been playing (self taught) for about 5 months. Yes, I still stumble and make it sound bad from time to time, but these books have given me the confidence that if I practice and practice, I can sound great. Other people have listened to me play, and they just cannot believe what they are hearing.

I even bought the entire series for my 81 yr old mother to start playing again with. I guess that pretty much sums it up.

BTW, if you change it up some, "Little Brown Jug" can become "My Ding-A-Ling"!

Self Study piano learning

Really like this book, already got the second in the series for when I finish the first. If you want to learn piano, and you are a busy person, this is the way to go. I like that the book also discusses a bit of music theory. There are instructions on how to write music, how to read music, and how to play. Really really excellent. The only thing to remember is that if you don't have a piano teacher beside you you can be messing up your technique unwittingly, so if that is an issue self study would probably not be for you. LOVE IT!!

A Super book and /dvd

If I could I would give this book 10 stars, I played piano and organ about 30 years ago and just recently at the age of 93 revived my music, bought an organ and later an electric piano. The organ and I got along very well, but the piano was a different story. After trying many "how to books" I purchased this book. Wow! What a difference - my piano and I are now good friends and I have learned so much from this book and DVD and I am still learning. I have been thru the book twice and still find other things to learn, If you are a budding pianist, and want to learn without a teacher I highly recommend this book. All of Alfred's book are good.
