Excellent Textbook

Another fine text from the Princeton Series.
First, from a review in Journal of Statistical Physics (Ben-Avraham, 2012) :
"...remarkably self-contained and comprehensive introductory textbook..."
Next, my impressions:
The Thermodynamics is presented via a postulational (deductive)approach and this clearly enunciated.
Statistical Mechanical fundamentals are presented in the third chapter,lucidly expounding upon such standards
as phase space, observables, quantum states and the variational principle.
The later chapters (6-10),are beautiful expositions of more advanced material.
In particular,Chapter 9 (Dynamics), surveying Brownian Motion and Stochastics, is exceptional, proffering an interplay
between heuristic and analytical formalism.
The author gives nod to Boltzmann's conception of "..Entropy as an expression of the volume of the accessible phase space."
Chapter Five (Phase Transitions) is a delight; herein expressions derived for duality of Ising Model in two dimensions (Page 142),
Mean Fields supported via variational approach (Page 148) , and Einstein's theory of fluctuations (Page 157) aptly described.
And, scattered throughout we find in-line exercises, recommended readings (especially important in order to supplement the brevity ),
culminating in a lengthy bibliography.
The exposition is lucid and derivations straightforward, if not easy to comprehend.
Author's stated goal: "..to be both a beginner's and advanced course."
The author structures the text according to those aims, the first five chapters tailored for the beginner,
the remainder of the text, then, being more advanced.

For math majors only

The text is good, until the author gets to the equations, at which point he totally loses the reader (me, at least). The author frequently skips steps in the equation derivations and expects the reader to follow while performing multi variate chain rule differentiation in his head. I have read many textbooks in mechanics and research in comp. chem and bio and the author still manages to lose me every two pages or so. Maybe this is good for geniuses, but for regulars maybe a more standard textbook like Atkins or Dill is better

A Research Grammar of Biblical Hebrew--in English!

In their preface, Waltke and O'Connor describe their work as an intermediate grammar to be employed between basic grammatical studies and more advanced research literature. The reference nature of this volume is exhibited in its logical and topical arrangement. The introductory section deals with matters of history (of the language, the Hebrew Scriptures, the study of Hebrew), linguistics, and grammatical units. The second section of the volume covers Hebrew nouns; the third considers adjectives, numerals, and pronouns; the fourth delves into classical Hebrew's verbal stems; and, the final section describes the usage of verbal conjugations and clauses. The glossary of grammatical terms, classified bibliography, and indexes enhance the volume and enable the teacher and student to maximize its use.
An Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax (IBHS) provides the students of biblical Hebrew with the most up to date and scholarly grammar written in the English language. The authors make it clear that their volume does not replace other reference grammars. Their reasoning is both honest and accurate-IBHS is not exhaustive either in treating exceptions or even in covering all matters of syntax and grammar. This grammar, however, is so well written that we can only hope that Waltke and O'Connor will see fit to complete this magnificent offering in a second volume that would treat the remaining elements of Hebrew syntax with the same excellence manifested in this work.
All other reference biblical Hebrew grammars for English language readers have been written first in another language and then translated into English. The only exhaustive reference grammar for biblical Hebrew available in the English language is the old classic, Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar (Oxford University Press, 1910), edited in the original German by Emil Kautzsch and in the English translation by A. E. Cowley. It is woefully out of date, however, being nearly one hundred years old. More recently, Paul Joüon's A Grammar of Biblical Hebrew was translated from French and revised by T. Muraoka (Pontifical Biblical Institute, 1996). It is more up to date, but lacks the exhaustiveness of the older grammar by Gesenius-Kautzsch-Cowley.

Can't do Without

I have been a fan of Gesenius for a long time. While I knew there was updated information to consider, I thought his text was enough. But although his text is certainly still necessary, and necessarily covers issues that the book reviewed here does not, it is clear that one must turn to Waltke & O'Connor to reach a greater level of accuracy. Writing so long after Gesenius, they have presented new and accurate information based on the latest research, not only of Ancient Hebrew, but also based on cognate Semitic languages.
I have found the sections on Hebrew verbs the most enlightening and correcting, e.g., that the Pi'el stem is NOT intensive. Such intenseness must be detected from a combination of the lexical verb meaning, the stem, and the text/co-text. This book also presents other up-to-date information on the forming of nouns from verbs, etc.
As others have noted, the layout and presentation is great. It really can't be presented any easier, I don't think.
One must read Gesenius, for he presents very important information across the board, including much on phonology and linguistics not covered by Waltke & O'Connor. But to stick with Gesenius will leave one in error on some points. Waltke & O'Connor, simply put, make the corrections and make studying Biblical Hebrew exciting, and even much easier to learn.

Hard to Beat

Waltke's grammar is about as good as it gets with Hebrew Grammars. Considering the subject matter and its scope one has to expect a monolith like this 700pg jumbo sized monster. But this isn't just some pedantic and wordy school book, it is accessible (assuming that the reader has a basic understanding of Hebrew already), rich with Biblical examples, and comprehensive (at least as far as a grammar can be). This book has set a standard for Hebrew Grammars and is a must for the serious Hebrew student.

Grade 5-7-This powerful collection takes readers on a sometimes harrowing journey through the nightmare that was apartheid South Africa. The stories take place at various times between 1948, the year that marks the beginning of apartheid, through 2000. The main characters, who come from different ethnic and economic groups, are all children, and Naidoo's reliance on a child's perspective ensures that the material remains emotionally manageable. The author's touch is deft and sure, as she captures the ordinary details of life, along with the racism displayed in the speech and attitudes of white South Africans. In one of the most wrenching stories, "The Noose," a boy of mixed race relates how on his birthday his father was reclassified "African," thus imperiling not only his job, but even his ability to live with his family. Other stories tell of the white daughter of politically progressive parents who is trying to negotiate the racist world of her friend's parents, and a black African girl whose grandmother is drawn into helping her activist granddaughter during the Soweto uprising of 1976. The final story, about a middle-class boy of Indian descent who comes to feel a connection to a child living in a neighboring squatter settlement, leaves readers with the hope that human kindness will eventually triumph over the divisions among people. A time line of apartheid laws linked to the stories helps to establish the social and political context. As well as enriching any study of Southern Africa or human rights, Out of Bounds will be embraced by children seeking to expand their understanding of the world and other people.

Gr. 6-10. Each of these short stories, set in a different decade in South Africa, from the 1950s onward, personalizes the political oppression and struggle from the viewpoint of a child. What was it like to be a "Coloured" (mixed-race) child under apartheid and be separated from your father when he was reclassified as black? To be a white boy shunned at school because your "Commie" parents have "native" friends? To hear your mother ordered around and called "girl" by her white employer? Or to be one of the first black students in an all-white school that doesn't want you? More docudrama than fiction, this book doesn't have the depth and complexity of Naidoo's The Other Side of Truth (2001), but Naidoo knows her country's history--the crude, ignorant racism, the suffering, the courage--and her diverse young viewpoints bring the politics of oppression and struggle into daily life. This will be an invaluable starting point for group discussion about contemporary South African history, especially when read with the introductory historical overview and the endnotes about each decade. Archbishop Tutu's moving foreword speaks of the incredible absence of revenge and retribution in the new South Africa, and many of these stories show that hope lies in personal connections. About the Author

Beverley Naidoo grew up in South Africa under apartheid. She says: "As a white child I didn't question the terrible injustices until I was a student. I decided then that unless I joined the resistance, I was part of the problem." Beverley Naidoo was detained without trial when she was twenty-one and later went into exile in Britain, where she has since lived.

Her first children's book, Journey to Jo'burg, was banned in South Africa until 1991, but it was an eye-opener for thousands of readers worldwide. Her characters in Chain of Fire, No Turning Back, and Out of Bounds face extraordinary challenges in a society she describes as "more dangerous than any fantasy." She has won many awards for her writing, including the Carnegie Medal, the Jane Addams Book Award, and the American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults for The Other Side of Truth, about two refugee children smuggled to London who are also featured in Web of Lies.

I purchased this book to supplement my homeschool curriculum. I needed stories based in Africa and these fit that bill. It is a great way to use short stories to educate kids about the daily realities people faced in South Africa due to Apartheid throughout time. The stories gave them the perspective they needed, as well as teaching about general life in there as well. I recommend this for educators!

Ok... but I expected more....

Pros:
Definitions and concepts are introduced one at a time most of the time. Glossary is provided. Answers in even number problems are provided. Review and Discussion Questions are provided with no answers, but they can be easily checked in the corresponding chapters. Included in Appendix D is a case study on a donut shop of small business finance.
Cons:
Useless Excel spreadsheets that come with CD. The authors include Excel tables used in each chapters. Many times figures are HARD TYPED, not derived from formulas. Some people may want to use the spreadsheets for their own needs, but this practice diminishes the point of using a spreadsheet. Some concepts are not clearly or completely explained such as future value of an ordinary annuity, and EOQ (basically formulas in chap 8). The derivations of formulas are not provided, which let the reader merely memorize and simply plug in values in the formula without understanding the context to use and the assumptions. "Entrepreneurial" contents are scarce considering the intent of the book, which barely distinguishes itself from other typical corporate finance books. I would like to see more real life case studies such as the one in Appendix D, so that material learned throughout chapters can be demonstrated in the context and in a coherent manner. Interdependences and relations of concepts should be explicitly iterated and be shown with visual aids.
Prerequisite:
Basic algebra at junior high school level, including power, logarithm and summation. No prior knowledge of finance is assumed.
Comment:
I would look elsewhere for a basic finance book with more of application and implementation tastes. This may -not be fair to the authors' intention, but hands-on modeling with spreadsheet is a better and more sophisticated approach to me. I recommend to read any introductory finance book that explains concepts and their interdependence very well, then move on to a spreadsheet modeling book for implementation such as Financial Modeling by Benninga, Practical Management Science by Winston and Albright, Excel 2000 Formulas by Walkenbach, and Financial Models Using Simulation and Optimization by Winston.

A nice useful textbook on small business finance. I had the previous edition as well, and there didn't seem to be much new in this one, so whether you need the new edition will depend on your class. Very useful and informative regardless.

Lousy book

Introduction expressly mentioned that one does not need to possess any financial or business background to understand the concepts, this is only partially true. It starts out fine then got more and more ambiguous. Not abstract, ambiguous. It ends by presenting some number, usually a decimal, then by way of saying something previously discussed, it turns into this number. And then there's this, but wait there's this too, and that, and finally you take this and voila, here's your new number. Never did tell where to find this or that, etc. just present it and assume the reader knows precisely what the devil he's talking about. I don't recall the last time when I have read through a chapter that takes only a half hour over and over for three hours and not able to grasp an inkling of the logic flow the author is trying to get at. Apparently I'm not the only one. The last few chapters [9-11] stumped most if not our entire class assembly and more than one book exercises left out pertinent information necessary to solve the problems. The professors equally stumped on a few because while the exercises left those critical values out, but the solutions manual had them in. I have not had a finance textbook lose this many points since I started College.
