Buyer Beware
By Kritik
Apparently, the publisher is none too willing to do a full reprint or custom publication of this text. I paid full list price for it after not being able to obtain a desk copy. What I received was certainly not worth list price, nor is it a hard cover. I received a paperback version of the book, and the pages are, at best, photocopy-quality ... and shoddy at that.

The book itself is useful, although incomplete in parts and perhaps too general for an advanced undergraduate seminar. For first and second-year students, however, it is accessible and its examples are relevant/timely. It does oversimplify critical/interpretive frameworks a bit too much for my liking. But, this can be overcome with a bit of creativity on the instructor's part.

Great buy!
By BCC
I signed up for a course in the summer and of course the bookstore at my university did not order enough books for the 12 of us taking the course. I shopped around on Amazon and found this seller. I ordered the book on a Thursday and received it Saturday. I will definitely order from this seller again. I would highly recommend her as well. The book was in good condition. It had a few highlighted areas and a few bent corners...but that was about it.

The Sicilian Vespers: A History of the Mediterranean World in the Later Thirteenth Century (Canto), by Steven Runciman

On 30 March 1282, as the bells of Palermo were ringing for Vespers, the Sicilian townsfolk, crying 'Death to the French', slaughtered the garrison and administration of their Angevin King. Seen in historical perspective it was not an especially big massacre: the revolt of the long-subjugated Sicilians might seem just another resistance movement. But the events of 1282 came at a crucial moment. Steven Runciman takes the Vespers as the climax of a great narrative sweep covering the whole of the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century. His sustained narrative power is displayed here with concentrated brilliance in the rise and fall of this fascinating episode. This is also an excellent guide to the historical background to Dante's Divine Comedy, forming almost a Who's Who of the political figures in it, and providing insight into their placement in Hell, Paradise or Purgatory.

Amazon.com Review
On March 30, 1282, as the church bells of Palermo were sounding vespers, a crowd of Sicilians fell on a party of French soldiers, the enforcers of Angevin rule over the island. Within minutes the French lay dead. The Palermo revolt spread quickly across Sicily, opposed by Frankish lords and the Italian clergy, and supported by Sicilian commoners, Aragonese infiltrators, and Byzantine spies. Against a complicated multinational backdrop, the noted medieval historian Steven Runciman deftly portrays the tangled world of Mediterranean politics in the 13th century, the apex of the Middle Ages.

Review
"All medievalists should read it. Layman, too, are certain to find it as enjoyable as it is enlightening." Italian Quarterly

Sicilian History Expertly Done
By Peter McGivney
In the early spring of 1282 a great fleet lay at anchor in the harbor of Palermo, Sicily. The commander of the fleet, Charles of Anjou, brother of King (and later Saint) Louis of France, and by the blessing of the Pope and his own political machinations, King of the Two Sicilies, planned to attack the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and re-establish the Latin Empire, with himself as Emperor. For Charles, a man of formidable military and administrative talent, and considerable political ruthlessness, the possibility of being an emperor, of dominating the Mediterranean world, must have seemed so close that he could not fail to grasp the opportunity. And then everything changed.
The Sicilian Vespers, by the late Sir Steven Runciman, is the story of the late 13th century European world that created Charles of Anjou. Runciman describes in considerable, and very interesting detail, the interplay of politics and religion at that time, especially the bare knuckle politicking of the Popes, whose attempts at creating a universal Christendom ruled by the papacy eventually lessened respect not only for the individual popes involved, but for the papacy as an institution as well. The interweaving lines of narrative come together on the evening of March 29th, Easter Monday, of 1282, when a group of drunken Frenchmen arrived outside the Church of the Holy Spirit in Palermo just as the crowd of worshippers was going in for the Vespers service. One of the Frenchmen made advances, or actually tried to rape, a young Sicilian woman. Her outraged husband killed the Frenchman, and when the Frenchmen's friends drew their swords, the crowd jumped them and killed them as well. The oppressed Sicilians then went on a rampage through the streets of Palermo, screaming Moranu il Franchkisi [Death to the French!] and slaughtering every Frenchman they could find, including French priests, nuns, and monks, as well as Sicilian women who had married Frenchmen. The rebellion rapidly spread to other cities across Sicily.
Runciman expertly weaves together the story of what happened and why it happened and what the consequences of the great rebellion were for Charles and the Sicilians and for a papacy more interested in politics than religion. There might be a better book on this subject somewhere, but I tend to doubt it; Runciman writes in clear and understandable English, a talent not usually cultivated by academic historians in the United States, and he knows his subject backwards and forwards. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Middle Ages, and to anyone interested in how history ought to be written.

Byzantine diplomacy was the best in the world...
By M. A Newman
Sir Steven Runciman was one of the leading scholars of the Middle Ages. He also had a profound understanding of diplomacy and warfare. He is not only the author of this book, but also several books on the Crusades and Byzantium. However, this I feel is his best book. First of all it is a wonderful story. This is how the Byzantine empire managed with no army, no navy, very little money, but with a great deal of diplomacy and intelligence to prevent a planned invasion from the mightiest power in 100 years. This book should be required reading for all statesmen, would be statesmen, and military planners. Runciman describes here how things can go wrong regardless of ability, manpower, and money when one is faced with a very clever foe.

Well researched, well written piece of scholastic history
By A Customer
I was pleasantly surprised to find this a well-informed piece of modern historical anayalsis of the later thirteenth Mediterranean history. The book focuses primarily on the careers of both Manfred and Charles and their struggle to maintain an outdated concept of ancient imperialism. More than anything this book clearly shows the final transistions from an autocratical imperial Europe to a papal-dominated fractured set of European vassal states.
It is interesting for its succinct prose and deliberate factual outlay. Rather than seeking to impress upon his own ideas, Runciman deliberately tells us the history from a Latin perspective without impression of telling a story with all its propagandistic baggage. Don't be fooled by the usual publisher gumph on the back. The incident in Palermo in 1282 is used as a focal point for the history rather than being the main point of discussion and the work succeeds all the more for it.
A hugely impressive piece of scholastic history and, I would think, a vital book for any serious student of thirteenth century Mediterranean history.

  • Growing Up & Facts of Life

From School Library Journal
Gr 6–10—Twins Josh and Jordan are junior high basketball stars, thanks in large part to the coaching of their dad, a former professional baller who was forced to quit playing for health reasons, and the firm, but loving support of their assistant-principal mom. Josh, better known as Filthy McNasty, earned his nickname for his enviable skills on the court: "…when Filthy gets hot/He has a SLAMMERIFIC SHOT." In this novel in verse, the brothers begin moving apart from each other for the first time. Jordan starts dating the "pulchritudinous" Miss Sweet Tea, and Josh has a tough time keeping his jealousy and feelings of abandonment in control. Alexander's poems vary from the pulsing, aggressive beats of a basketball game ("My shot is F L O W I N G, Flying, fluttering…. ringaling and SWINGALING/Swish. Game/over") to the more introspective musings of a child struggling into adolescence ("Sit beside JB at dinner. He moves./Tell him a joke. He doesn't even smile….Say I'm sorry/but he won't listen"). Despite his immaturity, Josh is a likable, funny, and authentic character. Underscoring the sports and the fraternal tension is a portrait of a family that truly loves and supports one another. Alexander has crafted a story that vibrates with energy and heart and begs to be read aloud. A slam dunk.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal.

From Booklist
The Bell twins are stars on the basketball court and comrades in life. While there are some differences—Josh shaves his head and Jordan loves his locks—both twins adhere to the Bell basketball rules: In this game of life, your family is the court, and the ball is your heart. With a former professional basketball player dad and an assistant principal mom, there is an intensely strong home front supporting sports and education in equal measures. When life intervenes in the form of a hot new girl, the balance shifts and growing apart proves painful. An accomplished author and poet, Alexander eloquently mashes up concrete poetry, hip-hop, a love of jazz, and a thriving family bond. The effect is poetry in motion. It is a rare verse novel that is fundamentally poetic rather than using this writing trend as a device. There is also a quirky vocabulary element that adds a fun intellectual note to the narrative. This may be just the right book for those hard-to-match youth who live for sports or music or both. Grades 6-12. --Gail Bush

—BookPage

"[Alexander]'s at the top of his poetic game in this taut, complex tale of the crossover from brash, vulnerable boy to young adult."
—Washington Post

"Since poet Alexander has the swagger and cool confidence of a star player and the finesse of a perfectly in-control ball-handler, wordplay and alliteration roll out like hip-hop lyrics, and the use of the concrete forms and playful font changes keep things dynamic."
—Horn Book Magazine

"Kwame Alexander’s sizzling, heartfelt story-in-verse gives readers that rich sense of SWISH! we feel when a basketball drops perfectly through a net. Quick timing, snazzy cadence, a wealth of energy and deep affection for sports, family and life in general – it’s all here, in these gripping scenes."
—Naomi Shihab Nye, National Book Award Finalist

“The characters of Kwame Alexander's verse-novel entered my heart, as it showed the many ways in which the basketball, the truth, love, and life cross over and between us.”
—Marilyn Nelson, Newbery Honor winning author

"The Crossover is a masterful mix of rhythm and heart that tells the story of two brothers navigating the deep waters of love, loyalty, and championship play. Alexander’s verse is fluid and electric, poignant and wise, skillfully chronicling main character Josh’s tough lessons as he comes to realize that “true champions / learn / to dance / through / the storm.”
—Joyce Sidman, Newbery Honor winning author

"Bold! Explosive! Yet still gently poetic. I love The Crossover. Everyone will."
—Nikki Giovanni

"Kwame Alexander's cadenced basketball novel is a gem of poise and grace. His players come alive with the precision and control of an orchestrated musical composition. The poetry of the telling rings through to the heart. The Crossover  crosses over as a gift to all ages."
—Ashley Bryan, Two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner

A terrific verse novel with a wide range of appeal
By Liviania
Kwame Alexander's newest novel, THE CROSSOVER, is a verse tour de force. It's told through poems by the main character, Josh Bell a.k.a. Filthy McNasty. He and his twin brother Jordan (JB) are talented basketball players, but jealousy threatens to split them apart when JB gets a girlfriend.

I love how many levels of story are woven into this novel.

THE CROSSOVER is the kind of book I never would've picked up when I was younger because I didn't like sports. There is the sports story promised by the cover, all leading up to a big championship game, but it is far from the only plotline. Nor is it the most important plotline. That's reserved for all the family stuff.

There's the relationship between the brothers, at times super close and at other times strained. In fact, the first real schism in the story is when JB accidentally forces Josh to get his head shaved. Before, Josh's locks were his pride and separated him from his bald brother. Then, there is the relationship with the boys' parents, especially their father, a former basketball player and the man who taught them the game. Their parents' worries are on the fringe of Josh's awareness, but most readers will be able to put the pieces together. And, although she is a small part, the girl "Sweet Tea" is still shown to be a person, a talented basketball player in her own right and pissed off by the physical signs of Josh's jealousy, frustration, and confusion.

All of this is conveyed so elegantly by the language.

Alexander's poetry flows easily and tells the story in short pieces, making THE CROSSOVER inviting to reluctant and casual readers. At the same time, it's a sophisticated and rewarding form. For instance, the poems recounting games use lots of clever formatting, including different font sizes and diagonal lines to convey the intensity and movement of the action. They also use more rhymes than the other poems, like the rhythm of a bouncing ball. Unfortunately, I did think the poem describing the championship game was out of place. It was an abrupt switch in tone from the poems before and after it, even if it did match the other basketball poems. There might've been stylistic switches between other poems, but rarely a tone switch. It was jarring, and right at the height of THE CROSSOVER's effectiveness.

Going back to appealing to multiple types of readers, THE CROSSOVER is set in middle school and aimed at younger readers. I felt that there wasn't much that separated it from a young adult novel, except periodic references to the grade level or school assignments like THE GIVER. It particularly felt more young adult to me when Jordan contemplated which college he wanted to go to to play ball. I'm sure middle school kids daydream about a future in the NCAA, but this felt more immediate and serious. I gave some leeway since Jordan was the son of a successful player and has a better chance of making it, but it still felt off to me. What I'm getting at is I think high school students would really enjoy THE CROSSOVER too, but I can't see many high school students picking up a book about a thirteen year old.

THE CROSSOVER thrilled me, and I can't wait to read it again and pick more closely through the details.

I rarely have time to do that with all the review books on my shelves, but hey, I can take it one poem at a time. (Advantage of the form!) I also think I'll return to it because it is such a great family story. Oftentimes, children's books dispatch with the parents in order to focus on the kids doing things they probably wouldn't get away with if there were two loving, attentive parents in the picture. Josh's parents teach him, guide him, and discipline him like real parents.

Look, no one has to convert me to novels in verse. I've thought that they're the bees' knees since I first read Sonya Sones. I think THE CROSSOVER has the power to convert new readers to the awesomeness that is novels in verse. It certainly convinced me of its own awesomeness.

Loved it!
By Heidi Grange
I've been putting off reading this book because it's a sports book, and I don't really enjoy most sports books. Which is really rather odd since I do enjoy watching them. But after reading this I can easily see why it has received so much acclaim. It's a beautifully written, powerful story about family and change. I sat down to read this and I was immediately impressed with the verse. The language drew me in and made me care about Josh and his family. The exciting poems that were about actually playing basketball were so well done that I could see Josh on the floor making for the basket.

It always amazes me when an author creates a powerful story in verse, in so few words. The characters here are vivid and clear, each one shines through as an individual, which is all the more interesting since the story is told from Josh's point of view. The plot revolves around Josh's love of basketball, his father's refusal to see a doctor, and his brother's gaining a girlfriend. Except for basketball, Josh's world is shaken to the core by his father's ongoing refusal to address physical problems, and his brother's focus on his new girlfriend. His frustration leads him to do something he greatly regrets. The climax was a shock although I should have seen it coming, there were certainly enough clues. But when you don't want something to happen, it's easy not to be prepared when it happens, even when it's in a story.

I'd say this is definitely one of the best books I've read in the last year and I highly recommend it.

The Poetry of Basketball
By Kevin Joseph
The Crossover is a fun read, employing a poetic, hip-hop writing style to convey the high-energy feel of youth basketball from the perspective of twelve-year-old hoops prodigy, Josh Bell. Josh and his twin brother JB, having grown up with a basketball in their hands thanks to a father who starred in the European league, are not only their team's star players, but also best friends. At least until JB becomes smitten with new girl, Alexis. Can Josh and JB's bond withstand the intrusion of Miss Sweet Tea and their father's deteriorating health? And in the face of these challenges, can their team win the county championship? Grab this book and find out!

A sadder Reid

From the back: The bride had a secret..She adored her husband, but knew she could never give him what he really needed. That was why she walked out on their marriage two years ago. Passion is the risk that Joanna must take - if she's to save her marriage...
I was hooked after the first 6 pages. The tension between the couple over the phone was amazing. I couldn't wait to read what would happen when they were face-to-face.
This is definitely a darker Reid, which is probably why I would not say it is one of my favorites. Still, it has all the amazing tension and chemistry that I love in Reid's novels, so I had to give it the full 5 stars.

Sensitive subject matter, not treated with the respect it deserved
By Kissyfur
Spoilers:

While the writing was excellent, I had a hard time with the story itself. I felt that the way Sandro placed all of the blame for their failed marriage at Joanna's feet, even after he knew what she had been through, was reprehensible. There was no understanding, no patience, and no promise that he would be there for her no matter what happened. Instead, there were recriminations and ultimatums. She destroyed his belief in himself by pushing him away. She insulted him by believing he valued her virginity more than his love for her. She should just get over it already, and move on with her life--three years is "more than enough time" to spend wallowing in the past. If she doesn't sleep with him, he may just consider her a lost cause...

Truly, I kept waiting for him to get a clue, and he just never did--which for me completely negated all of the truly loving and thoughtful things that he DID do throughout the book. I think that's what upsets me most of all; that for once we were given a Harlequin "hero" who wasn't afraid of his feelings for the heroine, who loved her unquestionably and wasn't afraid to show it...and then the author went and ruined it all by making him a selfish piece of crud who cared more about his own hurt feelings and bruised machismo than the fact that his wife had been violated and traumatized. No, on second thought, what upsets me most of all is the way that rape is portrayed as something that can and should be "gotten over" through bullying and coercion, and that the trauma resulting from it can be "cured" by a couple of rounds of hot sex.

In the end, I gave this three stars. The writing, as I said at the beginning, was excellent, the story was well-plotted and made sense, and the portrayal of a traumatized rape victim was pretty spot-on. However, this kind of subject matter needs to be treated with a little bit more respect than Ms. Reid showed, and the typical Harlequin 2-page wrap-up was just not sufficient.

H is for horrible hero
By SweetLizzy
I hated the hero in this book. Whatever wounds to his manhood I felt no sympathy because he was selfish uncompassionate whiny tantrum throwing brute. He never expressed care, understanding, empathy, sympathy or anything for the heroine who was raped a week before their wedding. Hated this story so not romantic.
