Absolute Rubbish

This book is only 154 pages, which happens to be the crux of this book's suckiness. The author attempts to cover a plethora of technologies like express, mocha, MongoDb, backbone.js, Twitter bootstrap, asynchronous development, the node package manager, etc., AND he takes you through the building of a stock market program in node.js. Do you think 154 pages is enough to explain anything in detail? It's like he's been assigned the task of teaching you something, but he only has two hours to do it so he just rushes through everything. The book is basically an exercise in copying and pasting code, running it, and then patting yourself on the back because you managed to run something in node.js. Never mind the fact that what you just ran is completely incomprehensible to the person who bought the book.

I've noticed a trend in IT books recently. They try to throw as many titles as they can out there so they appear in Amazon search results, but most of the titles don't contain the same amount of content that they did in the past. So here SitePoint thought, "Hey we need a quick book on Node.js so we can tap into that market share!" Never mind the fact that the book is only 154 pages and WILL NOT make you a decent node.js programmer. They promote the book as "something you can do in a weekend" when really it's $20 for poorly written, rushed information that had money in mind and not you.

Nice quick guide to Node.js

I primarily use ASP.NET MVC and the Microsoft web stack, but wanted to try out Node to see what it has to offer. This book covers getting started with Node and then delves into creating a simple stock trading engine and corresponding web site. It covers a number of web technologies and libraries that are commonly associated with building Node applications including: Express (Node library for handling web requests), unit testing (using Mocha), Bootstrap (UI/CSS framework), MongoDb (document/object/hierarchical database), Socket.IO (always connected, socket communication), and Backbone (client side MVC/UI Javascript library). Of course you could buy a single book for each of these technologies, so each is only covered in the depth that is needed to build the sample web application. Overall the book is a nice quick guide (under 150 pages) to what's possible with Node.js, especially if you're already a seasoned web developer coming from another stack (Rails, PHP, Microsoft, etc.). It's not for beginning programmers or people who haven't done any web programming before. The book seems to favor a Linux development experience, but I followed along without a problem using Windows and Microsoft's Web Matrix IDE (which works pretty good for Node development). I didn't notice any spelling/grammar errors or code typos, which means the technical editors and authors did their job. I read the PDF version directly from Sitepoint. Sitepoint always publishes a stunning looking (full-color) eBook. Compared to the other Node books I've looked at, this is a more practical coverage of actually building a working application. Most of the other Node books take their time wading through the internals of Node. It would have been nice to see the sample application built out a little bit more (more forms, more ideas on how to structure the views, layouts, routing, etc), but this is the most complete book I've seen so far on building a web application with Node.

From a Windows / .NET developer and a Mac user's perspective. This is not a tender-footed approach suitable for a beginner. If you already have Node.js installed or are familiar with the Mac Terminal (which I'm shaky at) then this will not walk you through the process of install and initial configuration. Don't believe me? Follow the instructions in the section of the book called "In the Beginning" ... you can preview this directly on Amazon. There is so much left unsaid that I'm having to fill in a lot of the preliminary details by guessing. Economy of words is good as long as you can express yourself adequately. But at least give me a few screen shots so I can deduce what you want me to do next. I can't recommend this book.

About the Author
Garry Kasparov is generally regarded as the greatest chess player ever. He was the thirteenth World Champion, holding the title between 1985 and 2000. EXTRACT FROM STEINITZ CHAPTER:Steinitz was born in a Prague ghetto, into the family of a petty hardware merchant, in which he was child number thirteen(!). He learned chess by watching his father playing. After finishing school in the mid-fifties, he continued his education in Vienna, which had ancient chess traditions (it is sufficient to recall the names of Allgaier, Hamppe and Falkbeer). When in London and Paris the fame of Morphy and Andersen was at its height, in a small Vienna café a certain poor student was making a living by playing for stakes...

Book Review in process

Last night I began a review of Garry Kasparov’s volume one of “My Great Predecessors,” but I didn’t finish or even time-stamp it. Oh well, it was sometime early in the evening or perhaps even late in the afternoon. The point is that I will finish the review sooner than I will finish the book. As of this writing, I am on page 11. To be honest, I did a quick read of some bits of the chapters, but only to whet my appetite. This book alone is a massive undertaking, and I am talking of only the first volume! The page numbers end at 464 and the print isn’t large, so it resembles a college text-book in many ways. The book is historical and informative, yet not really a tome. I have been following the story of chess since 1968 and Garry has revealed even more than few surprises to my absolute delight. So now I return to page 11, soon to turn to page 12, and immerse my mind into the history of the struggle which began before the 1600’s.

A REMARKABLE AND PROFOUND WORK BY KASPAROV. THE ACT OF READING BECOMES MORE THAN INTERESTING. THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS THAT I WAS FAR FROM SUSPECTING. KASPAROV ALSO GRASPED ON THE PSICOLOGY OF THOSE MASTERS, THE FATHERS OF THE MODERN CHESS.

Joe Gomez has been an Essbase developer, designer, and administrator for almost 10 years. Originally educated as a Graphic Designer in the field of Computer Graphics Technology, Joe took a job as a mainframe Y2K bug fixer and the rest is history. Joe currently works as an Essbase technical specialist and is his company's OLAP Center of Excellence lead. Not a complete computer geek, Joe also enjoys basketball, fishing, bicycle riding, and photography. Volunteer work at a senior citizen apartment, and occasional free-lance design jobs fill out the picture. Oh yes, Joe has a special interest in collecting antique glass telegraph insulators.

Sarma Anantapantula currently works as an Essbase Consultant in the OLAP Center of Excellence at the Ford Motor Company. He has over 11 years of experience in the Software industry as a developer, designer, and administrator and has worked in various technologies involving client-server architecture, and Data Warehousing projects (tools like HOLOS and Essbase). Sarma also has expertise in web interface development (both Microsoft and J2EE). Sarma is a board member of the Hyperion User Group (http://www.hug-mi.org), and has presented on how Essbase is implemented at the Ford Motor Company. He has also published on "Executing DTS Packages from ASP" in ASP Today. Sarma is well known for his magic fixes; he has a fix for any kind of issue in any technology. In his free time, Sarma likes to spend time answering new technology questions in user forums. If he is not in front of computer he will be playing ping pong or chess with family and friends. Pretty Good

I came to this book after a brief into to Essbase/Hyperion from a consultant, but bought this book so I could learn in a more linear fashion.
I am very happy with this book. It helped me understand the relationship between Hyperion, Essbase and the Excel Add In/Smartview as well as how to install and get started (which I did not need to do but still helpful to see).
It went on to help me conceptualize an OLAP database (which was my biggest problem), then showed me step by step how to set up an outline and then create loaders to import data from other sources.
I would say this is a good book for someone who is on IT Analyst side of the fence, but probably not so much for an end user whose focus is data retrieval and creating reports. Unless that end user is going to be involved in a new implementation or upgrade.

I could not follow the examples

For me, it is very important that a book has good examples that you can follow at home with your laptop. I could not do that with this book. They present a car dealer company as an example, but then there is no detailed explanation on how you can load the data in your laptop. Maybe the authors should have provided a link so that you could download the necessary files.

On the other hand, the examples in this other book Look Smarter Than You Are with Essbase System 9 are very detailed and easy to follow
They use as an example "The beverages company" sample schema, which is available in any Hyperion installation. I could follow step by step the explanation on how to build reports, etc, so it gave me a real sense of achievement and progression.

'De Amore' - 'On Love' in theory and practice

Ficino's treatise is referred to as the 'De Amore,' 'On Love' among Ficino-lovers. This English translation by Sears Jayne is an indispensable tool for a series of classes I'm teaching on "Platonic Traditions: Virtue Ethics and the One" in theory and practice. As the first text in the series, I'm teaching the 'De Amore' as a foundational treatise in Renaissance Natural Magic. As such, it can be called a sacred "magical text" in the sense that Ficino's treatise embodies the Love itself that he so effortlessly confers on his disciples at the Florentine Platonic Academy, and which modernday readers are fortunate to also receive. Ficino's is a wisdom received through reading Plato's 'Symposium,' making this philosophical treatise truly a text for today's philosophers, lovers of wisdom.

An example of how this text embodies the creative "magic" of Love is the fact that Ficino delineates the entirety of the treatise in the first few chapters, so that, like the emanation of creation itself from God, called "the Good," the treatise embodies spheres within spheres of the genesis of creation out of that One.

In Speech I Chapter 3 "On the origin of love," Love is found to be the oldest, or first god, created by the Good and residing in the bosom of Chaos before the World. Out of that Love in the bosom of Chaos, the Good creates the World composed of three worlds: "first the Angelic Mind, then the World Soul, as Plato calls it, and last the World Body " (38). So, from the beginning of the treatise, Ficino guides the student using the Theological theory and practice of Lover and Beloved, with divine Love as the most useful god for this journey of return to God.

Coming full-circle, in the final chapter of Speech VII, Chapter 17, Ficino praises Love: "O the wonderful magnificence of this god! O the incomparable beneficence! For other gods finally reveal themselves with difficulty, for a short time, after you have sought them for a long time. Love runs to meet us even before we start looking. [. . .] divine Love, the giver of all goods, we are not able not to love. Let us worship this love, which is so propitious to us, with such a mind that we may revere his Wisdom and admire his Power, so that under the leadership of love we may keep the whole of God, so to speak, propitious, and loving the whole with the burning of love, we may also enjoy the whole God with eternal love" (174).

Too much non-Platonic drivel

I was very excited to read this book. I've always been a big fan of the SYMPOSIUM (and the PHAEDRUS) and Marsilio Ficino

is supposed to be one of the top Plato commentators of all-time. Unfortunately, the accolades bestowed upon him were a bit misplaced.

The more I read this book, the more I felt as though I was reading St. Thomas Aquinas. For people like me, that's not good news. What was worse, only maybe 35-40% of this book actually dealt with Plato. Much of it was typical medieval theological conjecture, with an occassional reference to the SYMPOSIUM.

On the upside, the strongest section of the book was the chapter on Aristophanes' speech. This I found to be quite insightful, and it dealt directly with Plato on his own terms (as opposed to trying to twist him into a pseudo-Christian prophet of some kind). The Aristophanes chapter is perhaps worth the price of the book.

As for the rest of it, there are some snippets of cogent polemics & insights here and there, but not a litany of them. Many of the claims contained in the book have been disproved by our modern understanding of physics (although this cannot be entirely held against the text).

In sum, this book is mainly for 3 kinds of people: those who relish medieval theology, those who adore Plato and those who are huge fans of Aristophanes. Anyone outside these parameters who is searching for a commentary on Plato would be better suited looking elsewhere.
