Drawing the Line: The American Decision to Divide Germany, 1944-1949, by Carolyn Woods Eisenberg

In this fresh and challenging study of the origins of the Cold War, Professor Eisenberg traces the American role in dividing postwar Germany. Drawing upon original documentary sources, she explores how U.S. policy makers chose partition and mobilized reluctant West Europeans behind that approach. The book casts new light on the Berlin blockade, demonstrating that the United States rejected United Nations mediation and relied on its nuclear monopoly as the means of protecting its German agenda.

Review
"Drawing the Line is an eminently readable book and it will be a welcome addition to the treasure chest of reseachers, scholars and students of international affairs." Pam K. Datta, Perspectives

"It is an exceptionally well written and prodigiously researched work." Thomas Schwartz, The Journal of American History

"Carolyn Eisenberg shatters the central myth at the heart of the origins of the cold war: that the postwar division of Germany was Stalin's fault. She demonstrates unequivocally that the partition of Germany was `fundamentally an American decision,' strongly opposed by the Soviets. The implications are enormous." Kai Bird, The Nation

"...exhaustive and impressive..." David M. Keithly, Politik

"Carolyn Eisenberg's Drawing the Line is the most comprehensive study now available of U.S. policy towards Germany in the critical 1944-1949 period." Steven P. Remy, H-Net Reviews

"This is a thorough, beautifully written study; it is unlikely to be superseded." Loyd E. Lee, Political Science Quarterly

"This book is a remarkable achievement. Its mastery of the complex US politics and diplomacy of the division of Germany and the beginnings of the cold war is truly impressive." Diethelm Prowe, The International History Review

"...a daring, provocative and challenging book...a must read for anyone interested in post-World War II international history." Melvyn Leffler, University of Virginia

"...massively documented and unsparing argument that not Russian, but American non-cooperation prevented Germanu unification. Even those who will dissent from the tightly argued case will remain in Eisenberg's dept for a closely reasoned and provocative monograph that masters some of the most intricate disputes of early Cold War history. This work is a major achievement and major challenge." Charles Maier, Diplomatic History

"Just when some thought we were approaching a consensus on the reasons why Europe and the United States sunk into nearly a half-century of Cold War, Carolyn Eisenberg forces us to rethink what we thought we knew...Her vast research and grasp of detail make us reconsider the historic events that triggered the Cold War." Walter LaFeber, Cornell University

From the Back Cover
In this fresh and challenging study of the origins of the Cold War, Professor Eisenberg traces the American role in dividing postwar Germany. Drawing on many original documentary sources, she examines the Allied meeting on the Elbe, follows the Great Powers through their confrontation in Berlin, and ends with the creation of the West German state in the fall of 1949. Unlike many works in the field, this book argues that the partition of Germany was fundamentally an American decision. U.S. policy makers chose partition, mobilized reluctant West Europeans behind that approach, and, by excluding the Soviets from West Germany, contributed to the isolation of East Germany and the emergence of the post-World War II U.S.-Soviet rivalry. The volume casts new light on the Berlin blockade, demonstrating that the United States rejected United Nations mediation and relied on its nuclear monopoly as the means of protecting its German agenda.

Best Book about Post-WWII Decisions
By Armen Pandola
If you read this book, you will understand a great deal about how the world came to be what it is today. This fine book, based on meticulous research, sets forth the reasons why the US wanted to divide Germany following the defeat of the Nazis. It reveals the hidden agenga of the US in working against a unified Germany and explains how the US was at the very least compliscent in the creation of the "Iron Curtain." One of those truly important books that all should read who are interested in world affairs.

A book all Americans should read
By pnotley@hotmail.com
This is a book all Americans should read, but probably won't. Although stylistically undistinguished, it tells a vitally important story about the origins of the cold war. Few criticisms of the Soviet Union's diplomacy are more damning than the way it imposed dictatorship in Eastern Europe. What Eisenberg's book suggests however, is that the partition of Germany was not the result of Stalinist bullying, but American preference for it over a neutral social democratic state. Relying on more than 70 sets of private papers and files, Eisenberg shows how the United States subtly weakened denazification, decarterlization and the American committment to ensure the war-ravaged Soviet Union its share of German reparations. Gradually they decided that economic recovery and political security required an American allied Germany even if the Soviet quarter remained a Communist dictatorship. As Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith bluntly put it "The difficulty under which we labor is that in spite of our announced position, we really do not want nor intend to accept German unification in any terms that the Russians might agree to, even though they seemed to meet most of our requirements." With Truman having only a vague idea of the real issues, the United States ignored Soviet plans for reunification, forced plans for currency reform, and refused international proposals for mediation of the Berlin Blockade crisis. The consequences of this decision were incalcuably tragic for Central Europe and the world.

Don't you just love -
By R. L. Huff
- how some reviewers demand "let's get the facts straight," and then reiterate the tired propaganda of General George Patton? This is the rhetoric of faith, to keep the smug warm and fuzzy inside, but not of historic inquiry. In the latter, Carolyn Eisenberg has done a splendid job of separating fact from faith and outright fantasy.

When Yugoslav Communist Milovan Djilas went to Moscow during the war, he was (allegedly) told by Stalin: "This war is not like wars of the past. Today the victors must impose their social systems as far as their armies can reach." But what to do when the armies stop in the middle of a conquered nation? That's when diplomacy's deceitful dance begins its piroutte across the pages. Both sides will demand political and economic unity, but on their own mutually exclusive terms; and must finally retreat behind their own barricades rather than lose the ground taken by force.

The Soviet strategy was indeed masterful, as Ms. Eisenberg shows. By simply demanding fulfillment of wartime promises - reparations, the anti-fascist purging of the German government, and equality in central administration - the Soviets would thwart US plans to use German industry for West European recovery through the Marshall Plan. The foundations of the Berlin Wall were thus laid, not in 1961, but 1947. As US ambassador Walter Bedell Smith plainly stated (p. 359): "The difficulty under which we labor is that in spite of our announced position, we really do not want nor intend to accept German unification in any terms that the Russians might agree to, even though they seemed to meet most of our requirements," thus requiring "careful maneuvering to avoid the appearance of inconsistency and hypocrisy." Indeed, the American strategy smacks of good old down-home Jim Crow-style segregation. This, as much as the Soviet "iron curtain," turned East Germany into a "red ghetto."

Only a social democratic Germany could have achieved postwar unity, but this was not permissable to those in power. When German Communist viceroy Walter Ulbricht said, "Everything must look democratic, but we must be in control," he spoke also for his West German adversaries. The real line through Germany lay in the minds of its occupiers: to restore the prewar status quo, via the German productive capacity of the Ruhr; or to remake the social, economic and political landscape that had caused the war. On this division was the line drawn, and of necessity all compromises had to be crushed, in Germany and throughout Europe. In retrospect, this might have been for the best: the contentions in a unified Germany could have led to a civil war, as in 1919. And with the occupying powers lined up behind the contenders, escalated into something far worse than a "divided sky" for Germany and Europe.

Though the cold war is over and the West allegedly "triumphed," the repercussions of this partition yet linger in the current economic blind alley of modern Europe.

Early on the morning of her eleventh birthday, on the beach beside her North Carolina home, Daria Cato receives an unbelievable gift from the sea—an abandoned newborn baby. When the infant's identity cannot be uncovered, she is adopted by Daria's loving family. But her silent secrets continue to haunt Daria.

Now, twenty years later, Shelly has grown into an unusual, ethereal young woman whom Daria continues to protect. But when Rory Taylor, a friend from Daria's childhood and now a television producer, returns at Shelly's request to do a story about the circumstances surrounding her birth, something precarious shifts in the small town of Kill Devil Hills.

The more questions Rory asks, the more unsettled the tiny community becomes, as closely guarded secrets and the sins of that long-ago summer begin to surface. Piece by piece, the mystery of summer's child is being exposed, a mystery that no one involved—not Shelly, Daria, not even Rory—is prepared to face.

Rory has a personal interest in Shelly's story since he'd been one of the many teenagers hanging out on the beach the summer the baby was found. A beautiful story
By A Customer
Daria Cato, unlike her older sister, cousin, or mother, enjoys waking up early and walking along the beach on North Carolina's Outer Banks. On her eleventh birthday, Daria begins her solitary stroll along the Kill Devil Hills Beach when she finds a discarded new born whose afterbirth remains attached to her. She brings the baby to her home, which leads to the child's life being saved. When no mother is discovered, Daria's family adopts the baby, raising Shelly as their own.

Over the years, Daria's parents die and her sister becomes a nun. Daria raises Shelly. However, unbeknownst to Daria, Shelly has written a letter to a former neighbor, Rory Taylor, who is the famous host and producer of TV's popular True Life Stories. Since Rory is very good at uncovering mysteries, Shelly wants him to identify her birth parents. Rory was a teen when Daria found Shelly. He has always been a bit haunted by her story. As he begins his investigation, Daria worries about Shelly and opposes his inquiries. However, Daria and Rory fall in love even as the truth rocks a small coastal community.

SUMMER'S CHILD is a taut romantic suspense that digs deep into psychological relationships between people and the after effects of their relationships. The story line is fast-paced with the mystery of Shelly perfectly plotted. The lead characters are a delightful duo and the prime supporting cast (Daria's sister, Shelly, and Rory's son) adds depth. As with KEEPER OF THE LIGHT, Diane Chamberlain writes novels that entertains readers with a suspense-laden insight into the human condition.

Interesting and original story
By Bonnie Gilbert
Early one morning while walking on the beach, Daria found a newborn baby. Bringing the baby to her mother, she saved the babies life. Unable to find the mother the baby girl was adopted by Daria's family.
Now, 22 years later, the baby is a young woman and wishes to find her mother. After contacting a television producer, she allows an old friend of the family to delve into her past.
But this is not a mystery that the family wishes to have solved, and the more facts that are brought up the more questions are asked. Who was Shelley's birth mother that left her on the beach to die all those years ago?
Summer's Child is the second book I've read by Diane Chamberlain. While not nearly as heart stopping, page turning as Breaking the Silence, this book will keep the pages turning and surprise the reader in the end

The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need, by Anthony Iannarino

The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.

Anthony Iannarino never set out to become a salesman, let alone a sales manager, speaker, coach, or writer of the most prominent blog about the art and science of great selling. He fell into his profession by accident, as a day job while pursuing rock-and-roll stardom.

Once he realized he'd never become the next Mick Jagger, Iannarino turned his focus to a question that's been debated for at least a century: Why are a small number of salespeople in any field hugely successful, while the rest get mediocre results at best?

The answer is simple: it’s not about the market, the product, or the competition—it’s all about the seller. And consequently, any salesperson can sell more and better, all the time.

Over twenty-five years, Iannarino has boiled down everything he's learned and tested into one convenient book that explains what all successful sellers, regardless of industry or organization, share: a mind-set of powerful beliefs and a skill-set of key actions, including...

·Self-discipline: How to keep your commitments to yourself and others.
·Accountability: How to own the outcomes you sell.
·Competitiveness: How to embrace competition rather than let it intimidate you.
·Resourcefulness: How to blend your imagination, experience, and knowledge into unique solutions.
·Storytelling: How to create deeper relationships by presenting a story in which the client is the hero and you're their guide.
·Diagnosing: How to look below the surface to figure out someone else's real challenges and needs.

Once you learn Iannarino's core strategies, picking up the specific tactics for your product and customers will be that much easier. Whether you sell to big companies, small companies, or individual consumers, this is the book you'll turn to again and again for proven wisdom, strategies, and tips that really work.

The BEST Sales Book I've EVER Read!
By Keith Nerdin
[[VIDEOID:22d1ba31ddf35ad5266a75b75cea91c7]] As someone who has edited and published a few books for different authors and also as someone who has read dozens and dozens of books on the topic of sales, I have to say, this book was a HUGE surprise! I've been a periodic reader of Anthony’s blog and watched a few of the interviews he did with Selling Power magazine and as such, I thought I had him pegged. I thought I knew what I was in for with his book. But I was wrong. Holy crap! Anthony’s book is freakin incredible! I'm truly blown away at how beautifully and brilliantly it's structured. I went into it thinking there wasn't really much new to be said about sales and was frankly expecting more of a creative repackaging of familiar concepts and strategies. Wrong again. I was delightfully surprised at how many times I was surprised—caught off guard by a truly fresh and inspired perspective or nugget of wisdom.

But what I think I was least prepared for was the absolute mastery he conveys in terms of his framework and vocabulary. Each step, each word, is so clearly used with such deliberate intent. It's abundantly clear that he has spent a ridiculous amount of time fine-tuning these components, or elements as they’re referred to in the book, over the years! He knows exactly how each one builds off of and depends on the another. He conveys the sequence of development with unwavering confidence and they never feel forced or fluffed. He doesn’t just make clever connections. He makes bold, authoritative declarations of how things absolutely do work—not theories or philosophies of what might be true. And I’m telling you, it’s 100% credible and believable.

Anthony’s style of writing in this book is so clean, tidy, stripped down, and packed with power. I know what an almost unimaginable amount of work, editing, and rewriting it takes to get a manuscript to this level. So HUGE congrats to Anthony for having the humility and patience to be open to and accept what was no doubt an insane amount of feedback and critiquing.

So...I'm going out on a limb here. I’m going to say that due to the level of truly expert craftsmanship, fresh insight, and succinct power contained in this book, I’m giving it the label of...THE best sales book I've ever read. I thought long and hard before making such a declaration. But it’s one I full-heartedly stand by. I really do believe it's just that good.

Anthony, I’m SO glad you've written this book and truckloads of kudos to you for doing such a fabulous job of pulling it all together!

Now as a little bonus at the end of my review, I mentioned how clearly and concisely Anthony writes, right? Well to help illustrate that, I’m going to share with you my Top 40 favorite quotes from the book. And each one is concise enough to fit in a tweet--140 characters or less and should give you a quick, yet comprehensive sense of the lessons contained in this book. Here they are, starting at number 40 and counting down to my favorite:

40 - Your contacts may not remember anything from your slide deck, but they will remember your stories.
39 - To succeed in sales, you must develop the necessary relationships before you need them.
38 - Self-discipline is essential to sales success. Your good intentions are worthless unless they are coupled with disciplined action.
37 - In sales, nurturing can be defined as “creating value before you claim any.”
36 - Great negotiating is not about winning; it’s about creating agreement despite conflicting needs.
35 - What concerned your parents should now concern you because the people you spend time with can build you up or pull you down.
34 - Put prospecting first. You can’t cram prospecting. It must be a daily discipline. Block out time every day for this activity.
33 - Prospecting is a campaign, not an event. It’s a series of “touches” that lead to a conversation and an opportunity to meet.
32 - Respect your competitors and believe they are every bit as good as you are.
31 - The antidote to complacency is initiative. Initiative is irrefutable evidence that you care about your customers.
30 - There is no way to rush relationships, and there is no way to rush trust.
29 - Stories are compelling. They move ideas out of the realm of the theoretical and into the real world.
28 - If you call to ask your prospective client “if anything has changed,” you will immediately identify yourself as a time waster.
27 - In sales, you must continually open new relationships. Remember, no opportunity is ever closed that hasn’t first been opened.
26 - If you don’t tackle problems quickly and directly, you’ll be replaced as surely as you replaced the salesperson before you.
25 - Your job is to create and sell a compelling case for change and then manage and lead that change.
24 - Self-discipline is the fundamental attribute of all successful people. It allows them to take action even when they don’t want to.
23 - Failure is simply an event. It doesn’t define you or your future.
22 - If you want to ruin your career in sales, just start saying, “It can’t be done.”
21 - When you hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone else can imagine, you always soar above the mark that others have set for you.
20 - Choose to be a leader. Take responsibility for producing results, for helping your clients create the outcomes you sold them.
19 - If you can’t devise a win-win agreement, you must walk away. This is the price of being a professional, of being a trusted adviser.
18 - Eliminate distractions. When it’s time for you to do your prospecting, turn off your e-mail, the Internet, and your smartphone. Focus.
17 - It is 100 percent your responsibility to grow, to develop yourself both personally and professionally.
16 - A “no” is not failure. It’s information.
15 - Being grateful is one of the most empowering choices you can make.
14 - Sales is all about gaining commitments from your prospects. But the most important commitments are those you make to yourself.
13 - Don’t wait. Initiate. Set yourself in motion and seize the initiative. Be productive, engaged, and innovate.
12 - When you know you are doing the right thing, the outcome of the sale matters less.
11 - Most people don’t fail because they can’t do something. They fail because they aren’t willing to do what it takes to succeed.
10 - Reframe setbacks and obstacles as feedback that helps you make adjustments. Then try again.
9 - In basketball, the game is over when the buzzer sounds. There is no buzzer in sales… because the game never ends.
8 - The hard-sell closing techniques of the past may be dead, but the need to ask for commitments from the client is not.
7 - The ability to think on your feet is no excuse for being unprepared.
6 - The more desperate you are to fill your pipeline with opportunities, the more difficult it is to do so.
5 - Your clients are not looking for a vendor. They want a partner who will charge into battle and tip the balance in their favor.
4 - Small salespeople ask weak questions.
3 - Negativity is the only cancer that spreads by contact.
2 - It’s a simple truth: the more you care about your customer’s results, the better your own results will be.
1 - Finish this sentence: “I sell ____.” If you answered with anything other than “outcomes,” you are wrong.

And that’s it. The title to Anthony’s book is about as bold as they come. But it may in fact, be just that. I wholeheartedly recommend picking up your own copy and seeing for yourself whether or not this is indeed, “The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need.”

Perhaps the Best Book of the Year
By James Muir
Having been in sales for three decades now I tend to favor books that specialize in a specific area. However, every now and then a broad scope book comes along that really hits the bull’s eye over a broad scope – Anthony Iannarino’s The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need is just such a book.

One of the things that makes Anthony’s book noteworthy is an acknowledgment that our mind-set is foundational for success in selling. When we master our beliefs and behaviors we free ourselves to achieve the level of success we desire. The Only Sales Guide acknowledges this by devoting the first half of the book to this subject.

It would have been easy to generically address the area of mind-set by offering up something in area of attitudes and desire but Anthony’s book goes beyond that by breaking down mind-set into ten components that are crucial for sales professionals. Each of these is given serious treatment and this whole section is like a personal achievement book unto itself.

Here are the mind-set areas Anthony addresses in the book:

- Self-Discipline
- Optimism
- Caring
- Competitiveness
- Resourcefulness
- Initiative
- Persistence
- Communication
- Accountability
- Influence

In the final area (influence) Anthony sums up using all of the elements to maximize influence. It is the mastery of all these areas combined that creates true influence. Lifelong attentions to these areas will make you truly great and a powerful influence for good among others.

The second half of the book is devoted to the specific skills sales professionals must be proficient at in order to succeed. The importance of being skilled in our craft reminds me of the saying by Thomas Fuller that “It is skill, not strength, that governs a ship.” So appropriately here we turn our focus on honing our craft.

This section begins with a reminder that sales is service. “Selling isn’t something you do to someone. It’s something you do for and with someone.” What follows is an excellent discussion of ten commitments each salesperson needs in order to serve their customers. I hope Anthony won’t mind if I summarize here:

- The Commitment of Time
- The Commitment to Explore
- The Commitment to Change
- The Commitment to Collaborate
- The Commitment to Build Consensus
- The Commitment to Invest
- The Commitment to Review Your Proposed Solution
- The Commitment to Resolve Concerns
- The Commitment to Decide
- The Commitment to Execute

This wholesome philosophy frames-up and paves the way for all the skills to come.

The section on skills contains solid and practical advice on eight skill areas – three of which are very special and unique to this book. The skill areas addressed are:

- Closing
- Prospecting
- Storytelling
- Diagnosing
- Negotiating
- Business Acumen
- Change Management
- Leadership

Anthony offers very insightful advice on the importance of these skills as well as their execution.

In the last three skills, (Business Acumen, Change Management & Leadership) Anthony covers new ground that to my knowledge, has not been covered in a sales work before. These are higher-level skills that are more challenging to master but are essential for sales professionals that seek to insure their clients and customers realize the full benefits of the solutions they offer. This is absolutely refreshing and raises the bar on where our minds should be when interacting with customers.

I was confident that I would enjoy this book because I very much enjoy Anthony Iannarino’s style of writing on The Sales Blog. What I didn’t expect is how timeless the material in this work is. Anthony has managed to encapsulate all of the core facets of professional selling in a surprisingly short number of pages. The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need is personal achievement meets professional selling. It’s both practical and inspiring. 5 Stars.

The most comprehensive book on sales & sales success written this decade
By Mike Weinberg | Consultant, Speaker, Author
I've been reading Anthony's blog posts for six years, and I've written publicly before that he's my #1 Go-To Sales Guru. He’s the first person I turn to for sales help, and he is the only one I turned to when my most sophisticated client needed perspective and assistance on a very complex sales issue.

Like many of you in the sales community, I have known about this book for a long time and been anxiously awaiting its release.
I provided the foreword for The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need so I've read it several times. It's not an exaggeration to declare that this is the most comprehensive sales book written this decade. Here are just a few excerpts from the foreword:

"You won’t find many books like this or authors willing to share the hard truth. Instead of telling you what you want to hear and offering yet another “get rich quick” or “lose weight while doubling your carbohydrate intake without exercise” scheme, Anthony pulls back the covers to expose deeper truths about who wins big in sales, why they win, and how they do it..."

"In The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need, Anthony tackles a crucial, central question. And honestly, this really is the only relevant question:
Why do a few highly successful salespeople consistently outperform their peers?"

“This book is built on a critical premise: Contrary to what most underperformers claim, sales success is not situational. No, it’s not about the market, the product, the company, or the competition. It is all about the seller – the individual."

"Anthony doesn’t hold back the good stuff. The first chapter of The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need jumps right into the deep end to look at the importance of self-discipline and what he calls “me management.” Do not skip ahead or blow through this chapter."

"Once you’ve read through Anthony’s master class on mind-set in part 1, you’ll tackle skills development in part 2, which is as powerful as it is practical. While the attributes, attitudes, and behaviors taught in part 1 position you to win in sales, the skills revealed in part 2 show you not only how to effectively execute the sales attack but also to win decisively. Anthony leaves no stone unturned, looking at all the essential elements, ranging from prospecting (opening relationships) to closing (gaining commitments) and everything in between."

"Anthony makes the strong case that to succeed today, we need to be more than just great salespeople. We must become great businesspeople. He shares valuable tips to increase your business acumen and set you apart in your clients’ eyes. He also ensures that you understand the importance of building consensus and how to navigate your dream client’s organization - connecting with various stakeholders so you can masterfully quarterback and advance your best opportunities down the field to score.

If you're a sales professional who wants to up your game, this book is for you. And if you badly want to become a true sales professional who wins big and wins for the long-term, this is The Guide you need.

Ruark Remembered: , by the Man Who Knew Him Best, by Alan Ritchie

Robert Ruark (1915-1965) ranks, in the minds of most discerning readers, as the finest outdoor writer ever to grace the American literary scene. His is an enduring fame, thanks primarily to three books, The Old Man and the Boy, The Old Man s Boy Grows Older, and an African classic, Horn of the Hunter. Of course, Ruark was also the author of several blockbuster novels, an immensely popular newspaper columnist, a satirist of considerable skill, and a tireless bon vivant. Fame and the ability to crunch out a prodigious amount of first-rate prose on his battered portable typewriter brought him considerable fortune. Now, some two generations after the Ruark s death, Sporting Classics will release a brand new book on the great author. Just recently discovered, the text was written more than forty years ago by Alan Ritchie, who faithfully served as Ruark s personal secretary and advisor for the last fourteen years of his life. The book starts out with a wonderful foreword by legendary African professional hunter Harry Selby who guided Ruark on a number of his safaris. It also features a number of photographs of Ruark that have never before appeared in any book.

Review by a Ruark Fan
By Aaron K. Adkins
I am a fan of Robert Ruark's writings. Seven years ago, I read "Horn of the Hunter" before embarking on an African hunting safari. I very much enjoyed the book and proceeded to read in rapid succession "Something of Value," "Uhuru," "Use Enough Gun," "Poor No More," "The Honey Badger," "The Old Man and the Boy," "Robert Ruark's Africa," "The Lost Classics" and "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa."

Many of Ruark's writings such as "Horn of the Hunter" are stories of his own hunts and experiences. And much of his fiction is semi-autobiographical, such as the main characters in "Poor No More" and "The Honey Badger." But one wonders to what extent Ruark has embellished. This book is great because the author, having worked as Ruark's secretary for twelve years, knew him well. This is a first hand account of Ruark's life including his great drive and his destructive faults.

The book "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa" is another recent biographical account, although it focuses mostly on Ruark's hunting and other adventures in Africa. It is also a good read for a Ruark fan. Its author, Terry Wieland is a hunter and gun aficionado, which gives him experience and insight that Ritchie does not have. But Wieland did not know Ruark, which is Ritchie's advantage. Both books are good and will be enjoyed by Ruark fans.

Beyond the words
By JohnBinNC
I was overjoyed to read this book and in finding out more about a wonderful writer. The best part is the book is written by Mr. Ritchie. Alan Ritchie was the personal secretary or Robert Ruark for twelve years and was present in both business and the personal affairs of Mr. and Mrs. Ruark. The "introduction" of the book is written by the outdoor writer and editor of this book Jim Casada and is most important in providing to the reader with the "who is" Mr. Ritchie, the relationship to Mr. Ruark and what and how this book even made it into print. Another great addition to this book is provided by Harry Selby the professional hunter, safari guide and friend to Mr. Ruark. Mr. Shelby offers a personal reflection how he reads "Bob Ruark" the man on safari and in the friendship between them that developed in time.
To read a book written by Ruark is one thing to read a book about Ruark's life and the times that shaped his experiences is another, so to the individual wanting to met the author I recommend this book! The real bonus for me in the book is the insight to the time before syndicated TV when the news and views of the world were paper bound and the relationship of Ruark and Hemingway in each man life. I was wonderfully surprised!

This revised textbook is designed for undergraduate courses in cognitive psychology. It approaches cognitive psychology by asking what it says about how people carry out everyday activities: how people organize and use their knowledge in order to behave appropriately in the world in which they live.; Each chapter of the book starts with an example and then uses this to introduce some aspect of the overall cognitive system. Through such examples of cognition in action, important components of the cognitive system are identified, and their interrelationships highlighted. Thus the text demonstrates that each part of the cognitive system can only be understood properly in its place in the functioning of the whole.; This edition features increased coverage of neuropsychological and connectionist approaches to cognition.

Through such examples of cognition in action, important components of the cognitive system are identified and their interrelationships highlighted. Thus this text demonstrates that each part of the cognitive system can only be understood properly in its place in the functioning of the whole. A particular feature of this new edition is increased coverage of neuropsychological and connectionist approaches to cognition.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7 Ghost story fans have a spooky treat in store with Hahn's eerie new novel. Molly, the 12-year-old narrator, and her brother Michael dislike their bratty 5-year-old stepsister Heather and resent the family move to an isolated converted church in the country. The adjourning graveyard frightens Molly, but Heather seems drawn to it. Molly discovers that the ghost of a child (Helen) who died in a fire a century ago wants to lure Heather to her doom. Molly determines to save her stepsister. In so doing, she learns that Heather's strange behavior stems from her feelings of guilt at having accidentally caused her mother's death by playing near a stove and starting a fire. Eventually, Molly wrests Heather from Helen's arms as the ghost attempts to drown them. The girls discover the skeletons of Helen's parents, and their burial finally puts to rest Helen's spirit. This is a powerful, convincing, and frightening tale. The details of everyday life quickly give way to terror. The pace never slackens. Characterization is strong, and descriptive passages set a mood of suspense. There should be a heavy demand from readers who are not "faint at heart." Judy Greenfield, Rye Free Reading Room, N.Y.

Love Mary Downing Hahn books
By L. P. Carvajal
This is my 2nd book by Mary Downing Hahn and as an adult, I do enjoy a good kids book. Her book was enjoyable (not as spooky as Deep and Dark and Dangerous), but just as enjoyable. The outcome is nice and at one point I think I got teary eyed. I hope your children will enjoy.

Great Not Overly Scary Ghost Story
By Kindle Customer
I always loved this book as a child! It really stuck with me. Loved the ghost story that wasn't overly scary (no nightmares) and I enjoyed the ghost was from an older time. Fun read for older kids (and adults!)
